That is ridiculous. "Many areas of Columbia are getting rundown"? That is an out and out lie. Do you ever leave your little suburban enclave in Lexington? You're a realtor in Lexington so your trying to use this site to steer customers to buy homes from you.

pwned
There are other good schools in the area, and Lexington has a terrible downtown and road network. Whoever had a hand in planning for that city should be water-boarded (I'm kidding!)
krissy0209: you are gonna want to look through this site. Go back and read through the older posts here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/columbia-area/

I'll give you the downtown part but we have plenty of quality shopping in the burbs. As far as the roads I thought the same thing until I got a map and learned some back roads. The town was designed around the back roads and they function quite well at moving traffic. I think they built the major roads to keep the newcomers out of the neighborhoods.

FYI, we moved to Columbia recently and have two small children, ages 6 and 4. We're inside the city in a relatively modest but very clean and safe neighborhood. We're in a great school district and are perfectly comfortable here. Being close to everything (downtown, museums, parks, shopping, etc.) was important to us. We hate long commutes and traffic jams, but we love mature tree cover and older homes, so we found just the right place for us.
While I understand the appeal of Lexington for many people, it's not right for us. Similarly, I understand why our neighborhood wouldn't appeal to those who prefer a more rural or suburban setting. Just decide which amenities are important to you and choose a neighborhood/city accordingly.

Get with it Matt - there is a Jersey Mike's in the middle of Lexington!
In fact I think you are due a trip to Lexington - there are actual stores there! There are also acres and acres of prime commercial real estate for sale between Cola and Lex - just waiting for the recession to be over. Honda is already up and running (moved from Cola). Peeps in Lex can shop at Target, KM, WM, World Mkt, Publix, Best Buy, PetSmart, Golds gym, Kohls, TJM, Lazy Boy Gallery (just moved from Forest Acres), Lowes, Home Depot, lots of little boutique type stores and foodie places, 24-carat organic foods, and so on. Lexington Med Center, the beach at the dam, the dam walk/jogging trail, great school district. Work is set to start on upgrading all the intersections on hwy 378. Beautiful lake homes and historic homes.
You need to get out and about!

There is also a Jersey Mike's on Devine Street. Since I live and work in the downtown area, I very rarely travel into Lexington County, except for occasional forays out to the Columbiana Mall area. While I do understand the appeal of the suburbs for many people (I grew up there), I am a staunch believer that a strong city center is what makes an area great and unique.
