I was/am also in this situation. I'm relocating from Boston very soon and I visited Columbia this past week. I found a really nice but cheap apartment in Melrose Heights, on the SE side near Shandon and Rosewood. I loved all of these neighborhoods and would have lived in any of them. They are beautiful, old, and seemed totally safe. They are also very close to downtown but not in the middle of it.
