while I cant yet speak from personal experiences as we wont be in Cola area until Feb; i do have some biz contacts from Charlotte who do love their city. But they did say that ice is a somewhat common problem in winter, i believe Cola is warm enough to have rain when Charlotte has ice. For us, coming from the snow belt, that was enough to push Cola in the forefront of our search at the time

You are correct...while Charlotte doesn't get alot of snow...it will get snow & ice when Columbia usually just gets rain. It does snow in Columbia on occasions...but is rarer than Charlotte. Columbia is a very nice city though.

Averages do not make sense...there is no average in weather now a days.

By no means am I arguing with you...but since it is winter...watch the weather and compare...Columbia was almost 10 degrees warmer again today...and our local weather man said we might even get ice New Years Day morning in Charlotte with lows in the 20s...yuck!

Charlotte has already had snow flurries/snow shower...but no accumulation.

I'd add about averages--i have used them to try and compare different southern cities--we needed something for a starting point. But the way the weather has been for us up here the last couple years, averages have been almost useless.
Example: we average about 45" of snow per year. Last year, we blew away old record and ended up over 104" total.
Our average snowfall for Dec: maybe 15". This Dec: already 38+", ahead of last year's record pace.
So averages have their place, but their impact on what is happening "now" may be off.
