Opinions about the Avenues in Cayce
Our family may be moving to a house in the Avenues in Cayce. The house is in the south side near the railroad tracks right off of State St. Some parts of the neighborhood look clean and well kept, but then a block over looks very trashy and down right scary. Also we have children who would be attending Lex 2 schools. Any opinion on those? Our shools that we are zoned for is Taylor Elem, Busby Middle, and BC High. I am concerned about the racial make-up of the neighborhood and schools. We are a white family and get along great with other races, but I would prefer not to be the minority. Any opinions are appreciated

I lived on the Avenues for a couple of years and enjoyed it. We never felt unsafe and didn't experience any real crime except for one time I left my car unlocked and somebody stole my phone charger. As for the schools your children will be in the minority until they get to high school.
If you want to check out schools start here:
GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community
Sometimes moving a few streets in any direction can radically affect the schools you are assigned to.

I like the Avenues. When I move in the Spring I may look for a deal over there myself. No kids though, the schools wouldn't be my first choice but I'd be alright with my fictional children going to BC and the feeder schools.

We live in the Avenues for 6 month now, close to L Ave and have no complains. We never feel unsafe here and we think it's a undiscovered gem in Columbia. We have no kids, don't know about the schools. It's a mix here, on K Ave some of the houses are very well kept, you have crappy and good but nothing outright bad, well except a couple of rental houses... no real racial mix here as I can tell. A lot of our neigbors have lived here for many years.

Why should the racial makeup matter?

Because he lives in the real world where it does matter. We need to stop pretending it doesn't before the Black Caucus and NAACP come back. I don't think I need to post statistics. Most people know the real deal.
