Default Lake Carolina or Irmo/Lexington

We are retired empty-nesters moving to the Columbia area in 2010 from Massachusetts. We have visited the area several times and are very fond of Lake Carolina and Irmo/Lexington. We enjoy the offerings of Columbia (Universities, Theatre, Opera), and lots of restaurants/shopping. Lake Carolina is a bit secluded but has local activities and festivals of its own. Are there any pros/cons to either areas?

Not really when you compare one to the other. Go with the one that feels most like home. The biggest difference is probably Lake Murray but you didn't mention that you like boating.

My husband and I just made this decision and we choose Lake Carolina. Although we are a young family, many of our neighbors are empty nesters. We couldn't find a neighborhood in Irmo/Lex that compared to Lake Carolina. We love all the walking trails, pool, new Y, etc. Shopping is also nearby, and although there aren't quite as many stores as in Irmo, traffic isn't as bad either. You are also close to 77 and 20. We love it here.

This is true. The only neighborhood even similar to Lake Carolina right now is Lake Frances. Same developer, more rural and much smaller.
