Wow, just read this story and think it is very, very sad. I absolutely HATE seeing people drive vehicles without headlights on after dark. At times I wonder if they are attempting to evade law enforcement for some reason. However in this case, I do not doubt sleep deprivation played a significant role in the outcome. I hope Mr. Benjamin had a legitimate reason for driving without headlights, or will be prosecuted accordingly for potentially causing the serious accident.
Big deal. Many banks are posting losses right now during this recession. Carolina First is still is the largest bank in South Carolina with headquarters in downtown Greenville.
You missed the point entirely, but that's not surprising.

That's what I'm thinking as well, in which case, he should have had a driver. Sounds like what probably happened is that the lady was attempting to make a right on red and may not have seen Benjamin if his headlights weren't on.

True. I also believe knowlingly driving while sleep deprived is against the law, just like DUI. Either way, a responsible person does not get behind the wheel in either circumstance. Unfortunately for him, per the law, there is no valid reason for driving without headlights during night hours (before sunrise). He clearly broke the law, and also showed himself to be an irresponsible person. If the lady dies, he can (and should be) charged with manslaughter.
AgFirst in downtown Columbia is the largest SC-based bank with assets of over $30 billion. And Carolina First is posting loss after loss. That's a well-lighted intersection. I'm always flashing my headlights to let someone know theirs are off, and I can see them fine. I'm sure he wasn't about to show up for a morning TV interview soused. Until I hear the CPD and SLED's reports I'll reserve judgment, feel sorry for both Benjamin and the injured lady, and hope for the best. I don't know why anyone in Greenville would care about any other aspect of this tragedy.

That is speculation at best. Why not let the police do their job? I'm sure that vehicle at least has daytime running lights.

I agree with this. One would wonder if all the interest from the Greenville folks stems from something much deeper than an intra-state rivalry.

I don't think that's right. Proof: New Carolina First leader takes reins: Gompper running largest S.C.-based bank on interim basis (http://www.istockanalyst.com/article/viewiStockNews/articleid/3918257 - broken link) You guys in Columbia can care about our city manager in Greenville resig...errr...getting fired if you want. I won't hold it against you.
