So, Columbians.

After years and years, there's a new mayor in town: Steve Benjamin.

Thoughts?

Protecting the taxpayer was one of his campaign bullets.

From what I've heard, I feel very sad for Columbia. Looks like the new leadership has lots of issue. Apparently he was involved with some kind of questionable "pay-day loan" type operation for years. I've also heard he is friends with one of Columbia's long time crooked officials, E.W.Cromarti, who apparently has been charged with tax evasion. E.W. Cromartie Agrees to Plea on Tax Evasion Charges wltx.com | Columbia, SC News, Weather and Sports |

Where there is smoke there is fire. This new mayor should be given the chance to prove himself obviously, but from some of his associations, don't be shocked to see a dishonestly run city government.

Surely, I would think Columbia would have had someone more qualified?

Dishonestly run city government in Columbia? Ummm...too late Gsupstate. Columbia is already run by a bunch of crooked politicians.

It's a sign and not a good one: Mayor-elect Benjamin in car accident this morning - Breaking News - TheState.com (http://www.thestate.com/2010/04/21/1253380/mayor-elect-benjamin-in-car-accident.html - broken link) He can say during the campaign that he won't raise taxes, but we all know what's going to happen after he gets into office.

"Us"? You live in Columbia now?

Interesting that people who think Columbia is such a crappy city love to keep up with what's going on there. If the city's such a hellhole, why do you care who the citizens elected as the new mayor? It doesn't affect you.

The sad fact is a lot of people will judge any person voted into a public office based on what party they are affiliated with. I'll never understand how someone can be so biased to a party when there are numerous crooked politicians on each side of the fence - which is why I will never support either of the two exclusively.

I am all for smaller government, so typically democrats (but republicans have been just as bad the past few years) aren't who I support, but that said, I'm willing to give anyone a chance to prove what they can do; so I'll give Mr. Benjamin a chance to see if he really does what he said about getting the city finances in order and making it safer.

We really need a 3rd party to rise up in this country though whether it be Constitution Party or Libertarians, but that's a discussion for another forum

Okay...tax the people that live in Columbia to death. Happy? He'll be mayor for a few years than run for higher office that will affect us all if he gets elected.
