National Infantry Foundation pulls trigger on hotel, retail complex

The National Infantry Foundation is moving forward with a multi-million dollar project to develop more retail, hotel, office and living space next to the National Infantry Museum.

The Woodruff Companies, a Columbus-based development firm, will seek to have the acreage at 2866 South Lumpkin Road rezoned from single-family residential status to mixed use. The land is situated north of the museum between South Lumpkin and Benning Boulevard, one of the main entrances to Fort Benning. The project’s size now stands at 535 multi-family units and up to 225,000 square feet of office, retail and commercial space.

Columbus-based Pezold Management, a hotel and hospitality company that owns the local Marriott and Doubletree hotels as well as area McDonald’s restaurants, should break ground within a couple of months on a Hampton Inn & Suites.

The hotel, which should take roughly 18 months to complete, will feature 80 rooms but is to be expandable, he said. It also would include meeting space.

The entire project is expected to take as long as five years to complete.

That's good news. At least one museum outside of metro Atlanta is doing well. Let's hope the trend continues.

Hopefully sometime this year. As usual, the city of Columbus is doing a good job. With the recent announcements of more than 400 jobs, other companies quietly hiring employees back and the continued civic improvements, this whole area in West Central GA and East Central AL is doing quite well.
