Phenix City Moves Forward With 100,000 sq. ft. Municipal Complex Building (2014, construction)

Workers have focused for the past few weeks on the demolition of the four-story Cobb Hospital building at the top of 21st Avenue. Phenix City leaders battled last year over the decision to demolish the old hospital in favor of a multimillion dollar municipal complex in its place. With that decision made, it's just a matter of months before the area is an empty lot.

Contractors initially had half a year to finish the demolition. That's since been bumped up to 220 days, which puts the demolition's completion deadline in September. The land will then be ready for the construction of an envisioned 100,000-square-foot complex with a $10 million price tag that could be ready for operation by February 2014.

The new complex would enable city offices to relocate from Broad Street. The mayor's office, city council, finance and personnel departments, and Municipal Court would be in the new facility.
