The new Martin Army Hospital on Fort Benning is 51% complete. The 70-bed 8-story hospital will be LEED certified. The hospital is 745,000 sq. ft. and will have 2 parking decks. The project is $363.7 million. The building is primarily glass which helps with the LEED certification. The hospital will overlook the Chattahoochee River.

Rumors are now flying the old Martin Army Hospital could turn into a VA. Should be interesting to see what happens!

Almost three years after breaking ground on the new Martin Army Community Hospital, the $388.5 million project is 89 percent complete and on track to finish in May.

Construction on the 745,000-square-foot hospital is expected to end May 19 and the first patient is scheduled for Nov. 17.

The hospital complex on Bass Road is almost double the size of the current hospital, which opened 56 years ago. In addition to the eight-story hospital, the 70-bed facility has a four-story Upatoi Clinic and a three-story Oak Ridge Clinic to serve more than 54,000 local residents.

Since breaking ground on the project in April 2011, Turner Construction Co. of Huntsville, Ala., has finished the exterior walls of the facility, installed all the windows and painted most walls in sections of the complex.

From the emergency room on the first floor to the intensive care unit on the sixth floor, the building has plenty of natural lighting, spacious rooms and areas for visiting families. There also is a rooftop garden and two large healing gardens.

On the fifth floor, the entire space is set aside for expectant mothers and babies. The floor has five labor and delivery rooms, a Caesarian section suite and 14 mother and baby side beds.

All surgical procedures take place on the second floor, with five general operating rooms and one orthopedic operating room. There are also two endo-urology suites and six oral surgery rooms.

The most visible and scenic section of the hospital is the grand concourse, which allows access to the two clinics, pharmacy, food court and the hospital tower. Near the concourse is a small stream that runs throughout the hospital.

Although the construction ends in two months, about $112 million worth of equipment and furniture will be installed. Furnishings will increase the building cost to $500 million.

The hospital now employs more than 2,000 staffers, but more will be needed at the new hospital. At least 300 positions will be added.

Kind of sad that Benning has upgraded so much in the last decade in all aspects but Columbus continues to lag.
It is starting to show more and more locally as the years pass.
I see the city has finally decided to try and unload the Trade Center to private enterprise after years of pumping tax dollars into a dead dog.
The city has finally used all of its aces in the hole and will now have no other choice but to look at MORE ways to increase taxes on locals to make up for years of bad planning and procrastination.
Even a recent mayorial candidate has stated that this has caused major damage to the area.

What are you smoking over there??? Columbus continues to Lag?? Really? Whitewater, 1,200 new jobs this year (3rd most in state) buildings that have been vacant for years are being bought and sold, Saturdays on Broadway, CSU is growing, new development around gateway and Beaver Run. Announcements that the city will finally raze BTW will spur development around the Civic Center and 2nd Ave corridor is next.

Put your head back in the sand or wake up and see that Columbus is growing. Phenix City is getting it's ducks in a row, redeveloping its riverfront and Ft. Benning is completing major long term projects. These are exciting times my friend.

Couldn't have said it better myself! Had dinner with a friend this weekend in Atlanta. Met some of her friends. Soon as I said I was from Columbus they started talking about whitewater and how downtown has transformed. Many compare it to the early beginnings of Greenville and Asheville. If we can achieve that we have made it IMO.

Sadly the improvements you mention have are not things that matter much to locals or out of towners(razing BTW?..hello?)not to mention the ridiculously loooooong time to get anything done.
Moon Rd widening should have been done when North Crossing was announced and at about half the price it will cost now along with numerous projects that have been swept under the rug.
Benning has done more in the last decade then the city has done in twice that long if not longer and just plain looks better.
Exciting times?
You forgot to mention the quarter million dollar bathroom they want to build downtown(which most locals say will be more lodging for the homeless).
I have to wonder what you may be smoking...

It is great that after years of trying to find something to hang your ego on that Whitewater came along.
A couple of people compare Columbus to Greenville and Asheville.
Quite an achievement.
You have finally made it.
