Columbus: Growth and Development
Discuss what you guys think about the amount of growth Columbus is currently experiencing right now. Should the city speed up or slow down? Where would you like to see new growth? What retail/restaurants would you like to see in the city? Ideas for downtown, recruiting new industry/residents, etc. How do people looking at moving to the Columbus area think about the metro area? Just give your thoughts on Columbus!

Any info on Columbus would be great!
I thought we (family and I) had settled on NW area to move to this summer. Well DH wants to look into some other areas so Columbus area came up. I am a veteran and would like to land a job on a base. Have 2 girls so school is important. DH likes country living but $$ is a concern of his. Not wanting to spend too much on a home. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

luvsthebeach, if you like country living, then Talbot, Harris, Chattahoochee or Marion counties would be your best bet. Harris is more convenient and have the best school system, but the others will offer more for your money. Besides you will only be 3 hours from some the loveliest beaches in the world.
ATLCOL1, the growth in Columbus is everywhere, but I would love to see more retail growth in South Columbus. With more than 40,000 people coming by 2010, we will need to speed up some more next year. Some of the 40,000 will start transitioning in by the beginning of next year. We definitely do not need to over build.

Thanks so much for the info. Was just poking around this site and found the towns of Shiloh and Bibb City that seemed to be what we are looking for. Do you know anything about these towns or similar? Thanks again. It is hard to look when you live a few hundred miles away.

luvsthebeach, Bibb City use to be an old Mill town located within the borders of Columbus. The area still exist and we still refer to it as Bibb City, but technically it's Columbus now. It is a nice area, but by no means is it country. Shiloh on the other hand is a small country village, rather quaint, but nice. If you are looking for a small town with a Mayberry feel to it, then I recommend Hamilton, GA. Hamilton is located in Harris County, it is nice and slow, but very close to Columbus

When we lived there 09/06 to mid 10/07 I thought the traffic and road widening the places *I* went was on par with growth. Nothing sucks more than having 5000 new residents added and a 2-lane road--and where I frequented you never ran into that.
The "chain" stuff they have and are getting is again on par with other areas of the country I've been to as well.
I felt the amount of nice apartments they were putting it was good, but compared to where I came from the subdivision choices were all higher end and above (Dallas Metroplex). I think they need to build more starter homes.

There is some very nice new housing in Midland on the N east and Fortson on the N west. The lots are large enough to be fairly private. Still woods out there. My daughter lives in Midland and a ste in Forston. Those two towns are easily accessable via interstate. Midland is about 10 miles from Columbus. Hamilton

Hamilton is about 27 miles north of Columbus city limits. If you are looking for a job at Benning, then that will add to your travel time as Benning is South of Columbus. Cusseta would be closer to Benning. It is appx 15-20 miles south of Benning and Columbus.

Actually Midland is withing the city limits of Columbus. It was gobbled up into the city limits when Columbus and Muscogee County consolidated. It's is similar to Bibb City in that it actually is not a town nor a city. Also Hamilton is about 10 to 12 miles from the Columbus city limits. It is easier to get to Fortson via US Highway 27 (Veterans Parkway) and GA 219 (River Road). Midland is located in North East Columbus via Macon Road (US Highway 80) or Manchester Expressway (GA 85).

Midland is a nice area. Nice homes. Not too far out. Quiet.
