I am considering moving to the Columbus area to be near family. I grew up in the area but have been away for nearly 30 years. What's the job market like in Columbus? I hear it keeps getting worse and worse. I plan to check on Indeed and other job boards, but wanted to hear from others who live in the area. Is it really that bad or pretty similar to other areas with similar populations?

The job market is fine here. There have been over 1000 new jobs announced in the last few months. What are you looking to do?

That's just a load of crap...TSYS and Synovus are always hiring midlevel well paying positions. That's IT and banking. Insurance is big in town. As is construction/civil engineering. Engineering is strongly represented too, mainly by P&W.

If you can't find a professional job in Columbus it's because you aren't qualified.

What type of jobs were announced?

My housing costs will be minimal since we have a vacant family home to move into. The cost of living and where I am now is more expensive so once we sell our house we can buy something similar down there and have money left over. So initially I'd take just about anything. I have skills as an Executive Asst and also project management.

I'm considering getting an IT certification at the local university, but at my age I'm not sure that would be worthwhile. From what I understand TSYS and Synovus are the major employers down there. I'm not sure if Ft. Benning hires civilians.

There are probably dozens of Exec Asst. positions posted on job sites right now at all sorts of different companies. I wouldn't bother with an IT certification unless you find yourself working at a company that could use it and then getting them to pay for it. Yes, Fort Benning hires civilians, it's the size of a city and there are tons of jobs, not just DoD ones.

Good to know. I am thinking that the job market is going to be similar no matter where I live. I have office skills that are always needed. It's not the most fulfilling work, but it's not bad and I'd rather be able to leave the office right at 5PM, not get called constantly after hours and have a good quality of life with outside interests. Having minimal expenses makes this possible.

I guess I could also be an Uber driver!

Columbus has one of the healthiest job markets in Georgia outside of Altanta. You should have no problem finding a job in your field.

Just about every city falls below metro Atlanta wages. Not a fair comparison. As far as upscale restaurants, you apparently haven't spent much time downtown. There are some quality restaurants downtown. E.P.I.C. is one of the highest rated restaurants in the state. Retail here isn't bad. It could be better but look around, retail stores are closing everywhere across America as people buy more online unfortunately.

...Comparing apples to oranges here, aren't you? A lot of Columbus' wealth lives in southern Harris Co. (Median Household Income = $67,018)

Try comparing Atlanta (MHI = $45,171) to Columbus (MHI = $41,331) directly. Far cry from $15k, so I guess that means the job market isn't as bad as you're poorly attempting to prove...

Oh, also Metro Atlanta's MHI is $47,464, so I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers from. I bet you think that means Harris County has a better job market than Metro Atlanta.

Go try eating at 7th St. Provisions, River & Rail, or Epic - those are very upscale restaurants which would do well anywhere in the country.

I would like to point out that the 41,331 is the median income for the metro area. Columbus city median income is 42,306. Atlanta city median income is not to far up at 47,527.
