i found that columbus is very slow paced, and there is not alot of money to be made here.as for the people,i personally have encountered closed minded, really ignorant people(blacks, white) that has never left columbus and are basically afraid of "change"(change is good)i am a northener(brooklyn),i have a really deep new york accent, that i am very proud of,but it seems the people here in columbus just arent feeling it,so to speak.i honestly do not like columbus georgia,in fact i hate it here.however, there are many cleaning companies here,i'm sure you'll fit right in,good luck with it all!

You can try the pooler, Ga area. I don't think there are any natural lakes, but there are man made ones...lol. The best thing would be the fact that this are is lacking in businesses. You could do well here or in Effingham county. They are both going through a lot of growth. So there definitely would be opportunities.

Coincidently I have a roommate from Brooklyn who seems to get along fine here. I think it depends on perspective. Columbus is nice quiet city that is improving by leaps and bounds and at the same time Columbus is extremely conservative, yes very narrow minded people, undiverse job market, poor pay, hot humid summers.
It really depends on what you want. If you want the excitement of the big city then you'd probably like Atlanta. Also Savannah is really fun and more progressive if Atlanta is too big for you.
There are good things about Columbus and bad things just like any city. Columbus has actually improved so much over the past few years. There's way more places to go shopping than say a decade ago. The things that other cities have like pollution and traffic isn't as bad here. I have worked with plenty of people who were able to go home for lunch myself included. The weather isn't that bad in the winter the summers suck but there have almost been no natural disasters. Atlanta is only an hour and a half away. People are nice here and polite compared to other places.
However as someone on the cusp of graduating college the Columbus job market leaves much to be desired as far as diversity is concerned outside of healthcare and education. There are plenty of jobs but depending on one's field not enough professional jobs. However this can be problem in any city outside of a major city like Atlanta. I know several people with degrees in Columbus that have tried with no success to get jobs in their fields.
Unfortunately there are closed minded people. Yeah there are people who think they will fall off the edge of the earth if they leave Columbus. There are plenty of people who have never left the South.
The main thing about Columbus that I don't like and makes me want to leave my home is that it is so slow paced. I call Columbus the mid sized city with the small town mentality. When you include the area around like Fort Benning surrounding counties there's about 300,000 people here but you'd never guess it at first glance. For someone like me it would be a definite deterent from moving here. But if you can find a good job or have success with a business and don't mind the slower pace I would say Columbus would be fine. But if you want a smart cosmopolitan mid sized city then you'd be better off in Savannah.
Also as far as living on a lake is concerned. You might want to try north Georgia or the mountains or maybe another city in central Florida this part of the country just doesn't have a lot of natural lakes. However there are plenty houses on Lake Harding in the next county up from Columbus. Don't quote me but I think the houses right on the lake start in the 200-250K and just shoot up from there. But if you can afford $1400 then you might be able to find something. Also going back to lower pay hardly anyone pays that kind of money for an apartment so the sky is the limit as far as a nice apartment is concerned.
Good luck
Terrence

Hi,
I have been living both in Augusta and the last 6 years in Columbus, Georgia. If you like a slowpaced boring place then pick Columbus. There is really nothing to do here, except eating out (plenty of restaurants everywhere) and shopping. No recreational places, not many parks. No lakes , at least nice ones. There is West Point Lake about 40 miles north of Columbus if you like red clay and dirt. (Also they say its Atlantas sewer collection place). I dont know. We are moving away to South Florida.
Job market in Columbus is not good, the pay is bad, even in healtcare. The schools are so so, North Columbus is ok. I dont know anything about the colleges. We are only here for one reason, and that was because we were sent here to Fort Benning. The area around Fort Benning sucks too.....My advise would be picker a better place. Augusta is not much nicer either.
Good luck.

I grew up in Columbus. It is growing. I recently moved to Atlanta and never saw the closed-mindedness(if thats even a word) that people speak of. Everyone was always polite to me. Black people, white people, asians, mexican, etc..
If you are older, you may like it there.
