Columbus Georgia decline..what happened?
Just this week alone Synovus profits plunged 93 percent causing a massive exodus of employees to TSYS and elsewhere or packing up and leaving town.
and then this report Saturday...
Aflac stock took a 12 PERCENT DROP on Thursday due to an extreme drop in policy sales in US and Japan which is 70 percent of operating business.
21 Muscogee County schools fall below federal benchmark!!
5 OUT OF 8 HIGH SCHOOLS!!
Twenty-one Muscogee County schools failed to meet federal No Child Left Behind measurements.
That's nearly 38 percent of the district's schools. It's also more than twice last year's number of schools failing to make state-defined "adequate yearly progress."
News reports friday had numerous burglaries and windows being smashed out all over town(and not just in the bad areas)
They have had to hand out free backpacks and school supplies to the well over 3000 children that showed up Saturday afternoon(they only had enough for 1500)!!!
Can you now imagine with record unemployment and poverty levels in town and a totally overwhelmed, overloaded and broken school system adding BRAC addition of 35,000 more people to Columbus?
I can and it does not look good.

H-E-L-P! The sky is fallin', the sky is fallin'! I'm leaving! I'm going to Atlanta. Waite a minute, things are worse there! Then, I'm going to Augusta. Nope that will not work, things have gone to hell there too. Well, what about Macon, Savannah or Athens. Same!! Looks like things are bad all over Georgia! That leave me no choice but to stay here, work, live, play and pray. Choices, choices, choices... Waite a minute, as a professional I am sure I can find a job in another state, how about California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, or... That wont work either, that darn imaginary recession!

Can anyone explain this post to me?
The subject was conditions in Columbus I thought.
I agree with Georgialaw as these things have been going on for a LONG TIME and have nothing to do with current economic conditions.
School conditions are due to recession etc?

This is a stupid topic man...come on and grow up. Columbus isn't declining at all. You make it seem as if the whole city is falling apart and it isn't. Columbus is riding out the economic storm just like every other city. You are ridiculous.

Facts are facts and you unfortunately cannot change the damage done and ignorance of civic leaders.
Even local businesses know the city has been a stepchild/charity case to state lawmakers for decades.
Look at the terrible decline in just SIX MONTHS citywide!!
I think your Selig post has come back to haunt you...you blew it!!
Just my 2 cents.

The thing is you guys can never give any facts of things that have declined. What is so bad right now please explain. Selig Report will be correct. The economy tanked right after it was written, but it doesn't mean it still won't happen. Time and time again state leaders and economist have said that the local economy will fair better than other cities. Homes are still being built as we speak. Come to Atlanta my friend if you want to see a bad real estate market. I am trying to sell 4 partially developed subdivisions right now. You guys don't understand real estate at all. Leave the real estate up to me, and I'll leave medicine to you.
Give me 3 examples by the way.
