You want to live in the North side, trust me. That's where everything happens.
South Columbus is the Downtown, but there's not much going on, except a few good pubs, and a couple of restaurants.
In the North, you'll find everything you need, from shops to restaurants to movie theatres. Housing is nicer too.
Good luck.

Columbus is a beautiful city and there are beautiful areas EVERYWHERE. Not just above Exit 6. There are plenty of crappy neighborhood in North Columbus just like there are plenty of beautiful neighborhoods in Columbus South. If you are the one who has a daughter going to CHS, the area around the school(Lakebottom) is beautfiul. Lots of older homes that are well maintained. Beautiful lawns. The area around Hardaway high school arent too shabby either.
The places that I recommend you not living in include: anywhere near Ft Benning Road(Columbus South). I grew up in that area. I know what I'm talking about. Victory Drive(CS), East Wynnton(CS), East Highland(North Columbus), North Highland(North Columbus). The west end of Manchester Expressway.(North Columbus). River Road south of Manchester. Veterans Prkway south of Manchester. Some parts of Uptown. Some parts of Midtown are shady as well.
BUT like everyone said you will find yourself going to North Columbus (Columbus Pak Crossing) to shop and eat.

And once you get tired of the chain restaurants you will venture off into other parts of Columbus to get a true taste of the city. If you really are going to enjoy this area then by all means get away from the chains; you can eat at them in any major city, eat and shop at some of the locally grown restaurants and shops. Almost any type of restaurant you can imagine can be found in this area, from bar-bee-que to vegetarian and everything in between. Where you choose to live is up to you, but most of the historic areas are going to be somewhat expensive. Now is the best time to buy, before the influx of people because of BRAC and Kia Motors. By the way, don't be afraid to look at the Alabama side of the river. There are some very nice areas in Russel and Lee counties and with the industrial expansion going on in both counties it should be easy to sell you home, especially in Lee county. You did ask about crime, well as the population as increased so have the total number of crimes. Here is the FBI web page Table 4, Offenses Reported to Law Enforcement by State by City 100,000 and over in Population,Colorado-Idaho, January-December 2006.

Hi! Well Hamilton Rd is kind of tricky because there are your nice parts and your not so nice parts. But there are well kept, nicely maintain homes in that area. I will have to check out the address and I will get back to you about the area.

Looking for a home
Hi,
Have you heard yet if you are coming to Ft. Benning or not? I have lived in this area my whole life so I would be happy to help you with finding a realtor, getting you a newcomers packet of information about the area, etc.
Take care,
Lisa
