These posts about businesses fluttering, crime rates, car thefts, and break-ins could be a uniform posting about any city in the United States. The problem with disgruntled migrants is that they don't spend enough time searching the city for good quality of life areas. Don't discount the invaluables such as short-term leasing on an apartment while you look to buy. Then, know the basics: stay away from industrial parks, railroad boroughs, and polar geographical regions such as north, south, east, and west. Columbus High School is the best public school in the city, surrounded by beautiful Lakebottom Park and Columbus Country Club including St. Elmo district. This area is laden with some older, bungalow style homes with mature landscaping. "North Columbus" is rapidly developing with lots of stuff- check out Double Churches Road and Whitesville Road. No no areas are Baker Village, downtown, Bibb City, and East Columbus near the Civic Center. River Road is awesome. Green Island Hills is awesome. Any of the Greystone communities are top notch. And Phenix City is definitely NOT third world status. Phenix City is a wonderful progressive small town that does not exist in the shadow of Columbus. Share your stories, but please stop polluting the web with extreme stories.

Extremely accurate post for Columbus. These anti-Columbus posters make mountains out of molehills. They exaggerate everything.

More generic than accurate.
Columbus is experiencing major problems now due to lack of planning/foresight.
The feds backed out of the NCR deal leaving them to tote the note and now they refuse to account for the amount of students entering school system as well.
So much for a few old houses etc.

Finally a post that IS accurate.
I heard they blew a fuse downtown when they got left holding the bag on the NCR deal.
Maybe they can rent out their castle on Macon Rd to get the money...lol
The handouts are over.

I've lived in both Phenix City and Columbus and I'm not a fan of either place. I realize the unemployment rate is high in general, but Columbus seems to have it worse than a lot of other areas. I don't think Columbus has many good points about it -- it's overall a rather boring place to live (not factoring in the crime rate...THAT part unfortunately isn't boring.)

Everyone has already mentioned the crime rate here...seriously do your research before deciding on a neighborhood, especially if you have kids. A lot of areas of Columbus are extremely shady and unsafe at night. And while they have hired more police officers, we're still seriously lacking in the way of law enforcement so crime continues to remain an issue.

If you want a fun outdoor activity place (batting cages, go-karts, mini-golf, bumper boats, etc.), forget about it...it doesn't exist here. I'm told Columbus used to have one, but they had to shut it down due to problems with crime - go figure. Can't even have a fun family place around here without hoodlums taking it over and ruining it. Our biggest claims to fame would be Zoo City and Hollywood Connection, but just know that they were designed for ages 12 and under; so if you have younger kids, they would enjoy both places. Also, be wary of the Greater Columbus Fair in October at the Civic Center. It's right across the street from the projects and a very crime-ridden area of town, so make sure to go during daylight hours. My friends and I went last year at night and didn't feel safe whatsoever (as we were most definitely a "minority" - college-aged white females), especially walking to our cars afterwards.

There are only a handful of great schools left, Columbus High School is one - as it's a magnet school. Matthews is a nice elementary school.

Overall, there's a huge selection of restaurants (hope you enjoy eating out!) and churches in the Columbus area, but that's about it. While I don't think it's the worst place on earth...I will be extremely glad when I'm able to move elsewhere!

Columbus is overun with crooks and shysters who use religion to sell their bogus goods.
Ask around for the real facts.

I notice that here locally whereas businesses will use the conservative religion card to make folks think they are going to take care of them in an honest way and charge them fair rates. lol
About as low as you can get but it happens locally A LOT!

Hi all,

First post. I've been a resident of Columbus for nearly 2 years now in the north Columbus area around Glenns and am looking to relocate to a cheaper place.

I've found good ratings for an apartment community in Dinglewood. Funny as it sounds I'm really reluctant to move to this area considering it's very tricky to get in a spot between high crime slums, and million-dollar museums. The apartment community is Overlook Crossing just by the intersection of Wynnton Rd. and Buena Vista Rd.

Is this an area I should avoid in terms of safety? I don't want to leave home every day wondering if my place will be broken in to when I get back.

Really looking for some feed back please.

Thanks.

It's not the best apartment complex because of the location so close to higher crime areas. At the same time it's certainly not the worst. I've visited friends in that complex before and it was fine. My car was fine and it was pretty quiet. It's the other Overlook apartments next to AFLAC that you want to watch out for.

Considering that it is going to be cheaper than the northside I'd say go for it. At the same time if you can afford something else on the northside I'd try to stick with the northside. Although I will say i hear good things about the Lodge I think that's off Steam Mill Rd. So not all of the southside is bad.
