The city is one step closer to the redevelopment a historic part of Columbus.

In this morning's city council meeting, council members gave the "go ahead" that the city could acquire about five acres of land in the Liberty District after purchasing most of the land and swapping some with a local business.

The purchase will cost the city more than $500,000.

City Manager Isaiah Hugley says it's just one part of revitalizing a huge part of Columbus history.

"We're interested in redevelopment of the Liberty District," said Hugley. "It is an old historic district that has been in decline, and people have moved out and there is a need to redevelop, to bring back residential as well as commercial development."

Funds for the liberty district projects come from a 1999 special purpose local option sales tax.

Today's acquisition comes just a few weeks after the city swapped about half an acre of land with a church in the liberty district area.Col. City Council approves purchase of Liberty District - WTVM.com-Columbus, GA News Weather & Sports
