Red face Moving To Columbus

Hi all,

My husband just accepted a job at CSU and we will be moving to Columbus this summer. I was wondering if you could offer some advice on where we should look for a place to live and how safe these neighborhoods are? We have an 18 month old and will have to use a daycare as well. Are there any suggestions on daycare's???

Thanks!

North Columbus is where you should look. It is where most of the major retail and restaurants are located. There are a lot of nice neighborhoods and apartment communities. Also, the schools are good too. Check out the Midland area of Columbus. As for daycares, Growing Rooms is a nice place I hear.

North Columbus is like a whole other world, stay Manchester Expressway and up! I can't speak for everyone, but I've been stuck here for eleven years, been jobless, homeless, you name it, it happened! It seems like no one cares about anyone. As far as jobs go, it's not what you know, it's who you know. I have never been so miserable in my LIFE! If I ever have the chance to leave I swear I'll never look back! The best schools are North. Crime is on the rise and the CPD is way under staffed. Good luck!

Good morning all...finally caught up and enjoying a cup of coffee on this Friday 13th...lol

A reasonable post as this is what I am hearing from residents citywide even when things were presumed to be "booming"
Cessna has layoffed 200 locally/not opening new plant and the Kia spinoff company has cancelled as well.
Atlcol1 and Jla will chime in with-- it is the same everywhere-- or-- if you don't like it why don't you leave--but those are excuses for bad predictions/counting chickens before they are hatched situations.
Atlcol1 said Circuit City would not close locally etc and the mall just lost taco bell and arbys last week as well as Eddie Bauer and Hallmark with more to come according to mall manager.
City officials are still looking for handouts and it looks like the feds put the whammy on them and several other cities with the BRAC situation.
Where is Humphries/Selig fortune tellers when you need them?

If you're looking for safe, nowhere in Columbus (perhaps, in any city) is completely safe. I agree that North Columbus is your best bet if only because it looks better and newer than most of the other areas in town. As for a previous poster's comment about Manchester Expressway and above, I live off of Manchester and my home was burglarized two weeks ago, so take that with a grain of salt. You've got to be careful no matter where you are. Good Luck.

In anticipation of some of the responses this thread is sure to receive, here's a link to the Columbus PD crime stats page. They haven't released the 2008 stats yet but I'm fairly sure they will be higher than 2007.

Columbus Crime Statistics

Adding a few more sources...

http://www.idcide.com/citydata/ga/columbus.htm
http://www.clrsearch.com/RSS/Demogra...ime_Statistics -notice how in some categories (murder, robbery, property crimes) you have a higher risk of being a victim in Muscogee County than in the entire country.

You are right as usual: Cessna only layed off employees in Columbus. S-u-r-e! The original owner of the plant that was supposed to have built in Columbus changes their mind. Columbus is the only city in GA or the US looking for handouts. Arby's? I did not even know a Arby's existed in the mall. Now for that high class Tex/Mex Taco Bell. That's got to be the best Tex/Mex in the world, why would it ever close down? That has got to be the worst imitation of food, nope, I guess Arby's won that trophy. Taco Bell came in second. I can't figure out for the life of me, why anyone would dare eat at one of those fast food joints. Obviously few people did. Don't tell me those over priced junk stores called Eddie Bauer and Hallmark closed too? Boy some people tend to get smarter the poorer they get. I wish I could say the same for the wealthy, they generally get dumber as their wealth increases. As for BRAC, I guess all that building going on at Fort Benning is happening by itself. You betcha! I hope you enjoyed your cup of coffee. I will now go have some herbal tea. Talk to you guys again soon. Cheers

Default Honestly?

So no one, even those of you that live in Columbus, likes living in Columbus. I lived in Macon for 3 years and LOVED IT! You all have me terrified now.
