Columbus Ledger-Enquirer
The homes they are replacing were already earmarked for demolition years ago as they have been around since the 50's.
Ft Benning will be a min city within itself and will not add much to Columbus economy since everything will be nearly new and available to active and retired military.
I think I have to ask the same question as others which is what has this got to do with Columbus?

Because Fort Benning pumps $100 million into the Columbus economy each month. With BRAC, it will bring an additional $25-30 million per month.

That's why

I gather from what you are saying is that Columbus would not exist without the base am I correct?
Total salaries at Ft Benning currently are at 110 million according to my husband who commented that it was impossible for even half of that to go into city economy.

My husband said to look on the columbusandthevalley site for info.
It shows the majority of personnel would be temp transient trainees at around 30k and not permanent residents.

I work at Benning in payroll and have heard the same thing.
Noticed in todays paper that Infantry Museum is struggling to pay their bills already which I imagine has a lot to do with where it is located.
They claim it is public confusion but this has happened so many times in Columbus over the years.

The museum will pick up once it really opens. I imagine it will do well once it opens in June.

My take on why it has been slow:

1) Confusion on whether it's open
2) Confusion on where it is located
3) The main exhibit doesn't open until June
4) economy

The first 3 will be corrected by June. As for the economy, just hope it picks up soon.

The word I am getting from upper management is that there has been several incidents in the parking area and people are afraid to go out there(me included).
One man was put in the hospital for injuries.

That's hard to believe based on its location. I have been out there several times. It is a beautiful place that seems perfectly safe.
