Most suburbs are 30 minutes to downtown during rush hour. Living in the 'country' or just outside the major burbs will require more drive time. That being said, try Southern Grove City or Canal Winchester. You won't get much land with your 'country' for $100k though.

Westerville, Grove City, and Pickerington would all include a fair bit of semi-rural area in their respective school districts, maybe Canal Winchester or Hamilton? However, 100k will not go very far in any of those places.

You may want to look into Orient or Delaware. I like Delaware, has a country small town feel to it.

Lancaster is about 45 min out but could find more for your money.

I would really suggest working with a realtor up here. Just do a google search or if you have friends or family here as for a recomendation. They can start sending you mls listings that meet your criteria. It is a good first start.

The best schools are in Worthington, Westerville, Dublin, and Bexley, and I would gather that the Olentangy school district is pretty good given that many people I grew up with in Worthington live in that area now. It is growing at a very fast rate.

some people on here aren't giving you realistic locations. although places like dublin, powell, bexley, upper arlington.. and so forth may have excellent schools, you won't be finding anything within your price range. if you want a rural setting near Columbus you're gonna have to go out past the burbs. places that are withing a 30 min drive (45-HR during rush hour) are:
1. Johnstown
2. Carroll
3. Plain City

you will certainly get more bang for your buck in these country settings. I would choose Johnstown. If those areas are too far, you may want to look into buying a condo. Hey, it beats renting, and you'll get yourself in a better school district. Condos at that price might be found in Gahanna, Westerville, Sunbury, Pickerington... really Columbus is a big city, so it'll depend on where you're driving to and from work. e.g. if you're working around Westerville, Johnstown is only a 20 minute commute, but to downtown Columbus it would be more like 35-40

Marysville is a great, smaller community with good schools, and because it is a little farther out (about 35 minutes from downtown Columbus) you will get more for your money and the property taxes are a lot lower. Plain City is also another great community with a country feel.

How about a nice little 2 bedroom starter home for half the money you are willing to spend in a quiet and safe neighborhood about 45 minutes drive time from Columbus?

Dayton is definatley a place you dont want to move to . I live way north of dayton and I am so glad . I also lived in florida for a while and I know what your wife is talking about . Florida is horrible and I would never live there again . i hope you find something and good luck in your quest .
