I reckon this has been going on since the National Road first came through in the 1830s
Seriously, Columbus has
always been a logical stopping/trading/meeting point along one of the most popular east-west travel routes in American history. This is even cited as one of the contributing factors in Columbus' steady growth through the years.
First the National Road, then U.S. 40, and now I-70 have all carried pretty much the same traffic flow (to/from the same destinations) for all this time. Businesses along both 40 and 70 still cater to travelers from all points on the map.
