I'm only saying this to give you an honest answer from what I have heard about GC.
Grove City's "bad rep" is based on a number of things....
1. Everyone north of 70 calls it Grovetucky because the town has a long held reputation as being hillybillyville. A lot of the areas that had this reputation have come around quite a bit though in the last 10-20 years though.
2. 1/3rd of everyone in Columbus is within 1-1/2 of a generation away from West Virginia ancestry, and a lot of the relocated WV people live south and east of the city. I've found the WV people to be a lot nicer than the native Ohioans btw. I think discrimination against people of Appalachian origin is a thing of the past though. Few people in Columbus is actually from Columbus anyway and few people care.
3. People on the northside consider south of 70 to be "The Bible Belt," which probably ties into the WV factor since a lot of WV people are of evangelical faiths.
4. The water treatment plants, landfills and factories are south of the city, and there's this awful Gary Indianalike stench south of the city which you'll smell if you're driving in on 71 from the south side. I've never heard of the stench moving into GC but perhaps someone who actually lives there can comment on this.
So GC is not considered the hippest town in Columbus, but I have yet to hear anything truly bad about it as in crime, declining hoods, or whatever. Any of the trash talk you hear about GC is likely to be something only a native of Columbus would care about.
I think nowadays when you tell people you live in GC they're likely to imagine you living in a large tract home development vs envisioning you having a lot number in your address. Most people who move to GC do so because they have kids which is probably a good indicator.

That's a good, comprehensive summary Mikey. I think you covered all the main points that are common currency when typical Central Ohioans talk/think about Grove City.
One thing I've just gotta comment on...

I sure wish that were the case! Even if there isn't overt discrimination, there is still quite a bit of prejudice expressed in conversation, etc.
Of course, Appalachian-rooted folks are also good natured, tough and resilient enough to not really give a flip what others think of us anyhow.

I don't find the town bad at all.
There's discrimination everywhere...
There's plenty of shopping. I can talk smack about other towns, I have visited. Which weren't appealing to me.
I think it's a personal thing with most people. You either like a town, or you don't.
I've been to many areas. Lived in many states and overall - GC isn't bad...
I don't smell no stench...
I live in a nice established community (a house) and friendly and I mean friendly neighbors.

You said that in Grove City, where you live, you think there is discrimination everywhere. Sounds to me like the negative "grove city sterotype" is true then, yes? (from your experiences)

First off - discrimination reeks everywhere. I didn't say I have encountered it.
I'm not originally from OHIO - so I have seen it in other states, towns. So, don't put me in with sterotypes.
Unfortunately it exists...
Crime is all around us as well - It's everywhere. By me saying that - does it make me a criminal in Grove City????
I've been around other towns - that left a distaste in my mouth. I won't mentioned the towns name(s).
Like I said - it's personal preference to a town that someone may or may not like.
I'm not saying it's the greatest town either. I never had any problems and always found people to be very nice.
