Is it doable? If not, what cities would you suggest if working in Portsmouth.

I would not do that kind of commute, but I would imagine it would be a fairly simple drive up Rt 23. It would probably be a good 90 minutes to 2 hours one way. There are not any larger cities in that part of the state, only towns and villages. Probably the biggest place between Columbus and Portsmouth would be Chillicothe. It would be about equal distance between Portsmouth and Columbus, and big enough that you would have just about everything you needed there.

I wouldn't waste the time and money driving back and forth. Like the above poster said, you'd be looking at 3-4 hours on the road each day.
