It's what the students want. That was a crappy area.

The Columbus Monthly update on the Smithsonian/Natural History Museum possibility for the Scioto Peninsula.
Great concept but I wonder what is the likelihood that this would really happen?

The Natural History Museum is mentioned in the article as being in the "final stages" of negotiations, so that would seem more likely of the two. There is also the question of what they mean by a Smithsonian. There are no actual branches of the Smithsonian outside of DC or NYC, but there are hundreds of museums with Smithsonian affiliation. So if it happens, would this be the first branch outside of the East Coast, or another affiliate that doesn't carry the name? The bright side is that if anyone can make it happen, it is billionaire Wexner. The Columbus Monthly article also seems to be an early release of the news. Such significant news would be released in grand style, probably with some kind of announcement on the peninsula itself, rather than just a single ho-hum article. The news came from the Wexners themselves, however, so it is actually happening, but perhaps any formal announcement is still months away, maybe after potential renderings are made. These would be fairly significant buildings we're talking about. In any case, even scoring one of these institutions would raise Columbus' cultural game quite a bit, and it would have something no other city in the region would.

The precedent these developments set for the rest of High St between the Short North and Clintonville is an ominous one. The chances of having a one-of-a-kind Columbus experience here will be much harder to find than having a national "lifestyle centre" experience. On top of that, there's really no other street in Columbus that's as intact for quality local businesses to flock to and provide a similar experience to this portion of High St. It's either here or nowhere; guess that means nowhere.

The replacement for this block will be a 6-story mixed-use building with 170 apartments and ground floor retail. The retail section would have at least 5 available spots. While some of these buildings would be no big loss, a few of them are interesting and I wish they would incorporate some of them into whatever the design ends up being, but Campus Partners bulldozes everything it touches, so there is zero chance of that. The rough design is incredibly bland.

The Mount Carmel site redevelopment in Franklinton is still a few years away, but the hospital is seeking input on the future project now. One thing that will stay is the site's parking garages, which will be incorporated for use with the planned mixed-use development.

What's the status on Kafe Kerouac, the library, scarlet and gray cafe, little bar, cazuelas? Never a big fan of the area right across from campus. North of campus was where it's at. Ruby Tuesday and Suzie cue still around? 4th street bar and grill?

Behind a paywall, but the gist is that the apartment vacancy rate for all of Central Ohio is predicted to fall to just 4.5% by the end of this year. Part of the reason is that construction of new units continues to lag demand by a fair amount.

All of those places are still here and open. However the building housing Cazuela's is proposed to be demolished and replaced. Hopefully they would relocate somewhere nearby if that development ends up happening though.

OK good news, except about cazuelas. They always had a hoppin patio and generous margaritas.

Really disappointed about losing Toos. Wish I had time to go back for oneast tidal wave.
