Home-grown refers to where a company got its start. Metros that can create and sustain companies are the ones that do the best. Luring estalished ones or selling local businesses to outside interests puts you at a disadvantage because its only about price paid for the business or the rate of local taxes and subsidies. It doesn't give locals an incentive to build their business for the long term through innovation or strategic investment. They just take the money and run. Columbus needs more companies like Nationwide and Cardinal so it can be less dependent on outside employers like citibank and abbott.

Or be too dependent on manufacturing and end up like Detroit.

Usual suspects (haters) derailing the thread, but for me I enjoy the food & music scenes which are above-average for a Midwestern city of its size, as well as its broad spectrum of international residents (whereas other regions tend to favor one or two areas of the globe).

Good one that I didn't consider. Food/music scenes. Food scene for sure. Bethel/Henderson (NW side) have a great collection of ethnic restaurants representing many of the areas from which these new immigrants are coming. Columbus metro has a great collection of Asian restaurants, now having one of the largest Asian populations in the state.

Everybody please either stick to the topic or don't post at all. If you really want to fight, fight in private.

Every single post posted after my warning was completely off topic, but since the op wasn't taking part in this ridiculous hijack I'm not closing this thread, instead I'm bumping it to the top.
