Tips on becoming a substitute teacher?
I'm a social sciences graduate student at Ohio State (got my master's degree, working on a Ph.D.) and since I have a pretty free schedule I was hoping to use my teaching experience in a different setting. Can anyone give me advice on what I should do to get started down this path? Any info you can give me would be great!

Check out STEDI.org -- they are a substitute teaching resource center that used to be affiliated with Utah State. They work nationally to provide resources and training (some free, some paid), and there's a blog on substitute teaching called the "Bus Stop." I am acquainted with the director. The information they provide is really good.
I will tell you this -- unless you can get started in a city district or a fairly well-off suburban district, pay is low. Pay can vary widely and so can requirements. Call lots of districts before you select one to sign up with.

I work as a substitute teacher. You will need a substitute teacher certificate from the state of Ohio, tb test, and criminal background check.
If you know which school districts you want to sub at, contact them and they will get you the paperwork.

You might want to check
www.atozteacherstuff
for some help with subbing. They have a very active discussion forum - with one especially for substitute teachers.
