Blacklick or Reynoldsburg
Looking at moving to either Blacklick or Reynoldsburg. The house in Blacklick is Gahanna schools and the house in Reynoldsburg is Pickerington schools. We are a family of 4, a newborn and a 3 year old so we would like good schools. Any opinions? I have heard the crime in Reynoldsburg is high due to the mix of homes and apartments but I can't find a way to search on an address. Thanks!

I'm popping this up to the top since you have gotten no responses. We are in AZ moving soon probably to Reynoldsburg. I used to live in Columbus but it's been 10yrs. I hope someone can give you a comparison.

.. and never felt unsafe. I'd say to avoid the Broad St-I70 area though ... including the Scarborough mall area (if it's even still there). It was going downhill when I lived there and that was about 10 years ago.
When I lived there, it was definitely a nice place to live. It was close to I70 & 270 for trips into Cbus, etc. I'd recommend looking at some of the newer homes in Taylor Woods - just east of the subdivision known as Greentree on Main St. .... Some really nice homes there + you get a lot for the $$.
I don't know a lot about Blacklick, but my sister & her husband live there now (in a townhome behing the Meijer on Broad). They seem to really like it and they can be at Easton Town Center in about 15 minutes and into downtown Cbus within about 20 minutes via 670.
You may also want to lok into Gahanna, although it may be a bit pricier.
PM me if you want any info - I could even put you in touch with my sister if you'd like.
Matt

Before I moved to Columbus area, I did my research and I heard many good things about Pickerington schools. Now, after living here for a while, I know that many people choose to live in an area where their children could attend Pick. schools. They have competative athletic programs and the community is very supportive to their teams. Overall, Pick. schools are some of the best public schools in the area I have heard. Hope that helps.

Blacklick would be a nicer place to live than Reynoldsburg.
R'burg is getting a little flaky around the edges lately, especially west of the Creek (Blacklick) as the ghetto creeps constantly closer.

Lancaster Native: What do you consider ghetto? Just wondering. Sorry but your statement is just rubbing me the wrong way. 'Splain please.

Hi Chrissy, let's see if I can 'splain this to your satisfaction (not expecting you to agree, but at least see where I'm coming from...)
When I was a kid, Lancaster didn't even have a mall. River Valley got built when I was in HS. So back then, a trip to "The Mall" meant piling into the station wagon and heading waaay up to the Big City for a day at Eastland! It was magical. They had cinemas inside. Gazillions of restaurants all around. Fancy stores like I'd never seen anywhere else. You could even dine in style at Lazarus! They had car shows, boat shows, special events...to me, Eastland might as well have been Disney World
Last time I drove by there? (quickly, I might add) Dreary. Bleak. Scary. It had long ago become, in a word: Ghetto.
Unfortunately, that blightedness and general lack of safety—a sense that you can't go somewhere and feel secure in your person—has crept steadily eastward on that end of town. It's happened in other places too: witness the demise of Northland (the mall and its neighborhood).
So simply put, to me "ghetto" doesn't necessarily mean poverty. It means danger. A foreboding sense that if you happen to be there at the wrong time, bad stuff could happen to you.
Sorry to be so negative, but if I were raising kids my first priority would be their safety and ergo I wouldn't want them anywhere near a ghetto.

Ok thanks for explaining that. I know alot of people use that word to describe anything that looks the least bit different from them aka african american folks living in "your" neighborhood. I'm not trying to make this a race thing but I don't like that term. It's usually used to describe too many of "them" being in your area. If a place is unsafe just because of the crime I get it. But if people deem it unsafe just because people who don't look like you live there then that is wrong. I have always enjoyed your posts as they are very informative. Just checkin'. Thanks.

I really do not think that the areas around Reynoldsburg are really ghetto. There is simply a greater middle class of African Americans that are moving into some of the areas around and in Reynoldsburg. I have many friends in Reynoldsburg and the far east side of columbus whom are black and well off. The far east side, and east side suburbs have a little more diverse mix. Still Reynoldsburg is a white majority and is still far from truely being diverse. It is more a "sprinkle" of minority.

I think that the second statement is more what is going on here. I really think that Reynoldsburg and the near areas of the east side simply have higher African-American populations. The majority of those populations seem to be very middle class. There are some apartments that seem to have lower incomes, but the vast majority are home owners. I would not label these areas as Ghetto. Though I know many that do and have.
