NY2Cairo is on a distinguished road
Default Cairene & Nyer considering Columbus

Hello,

My husband is from Cairo and a year ago I dragged the poor guy from one of the biggest cities in the world to Tucson AZ while I finished up college. Now Im almost finished and Im definitely seeing that he (we) need to move to a bigger city.

I too would appreciate going someplace more metropolitan than Tucson but at the same time Im from Rochester, NY and NYC scares me. I want a place to raise kids but still diverse, preferably with a decent Muslim presence. Also, having a good job market that would cater to people with overseas and bilingual skills would be a plus.

So tell me about your city! Thank you.

Columbus should be a good choice.

metropolitan-check (1.5 Million people and growing, unusual for Ohio)
good place to raise kids-check (lots of good school systems, especially in the N, W, & E suburbs)
diverse-check (large populations of African-Americans and recent African immigrants, particularly from Somalia, plus large Middle Eastern, Mexican, and South and East Asian communities)
Muslim presence-check (see last comment)
good job market, need for people with international focus-check (OSU should have lots of opportunities for you, and there are many jobs in R&D, state government, and finance that would find your skills very useful)

Best wishes!

Decent sized muslim worship and social center on the west side, around Hayden Run Rd and Avery Rd.

I believe it's on Wilcox Rd, actually. I used to commute by there every day as it was being built.

Columbus should fit your needs, when you say metropolitan, just how large would you like?

Columbus' innercity has sections that are very chic and cosmopolitan, yet urban. Yet, Columbus also has very nice areas that are more low density in nature, yet with lots of shopping and restaurants and culture. SO you can find just about a bit of everything here. Columbus has grown more diverse, but not as diverse as the larger American metros.

If a metro nearing 2 million is your idea of bigger than you should enjoy Columbus. Because of the many government jobs and large number of college students/universities Columbus does have some cultural elements that not every 2million metro has.
