Default Looking for opinions on Canal Winchester

Hi,
I joined the forums about a week ago in hopes of finding information that will help me find a place to call home. My husband was promoted and will be relocated to Columbus starting December 1st. I have never been there in person, and I am trying to look for an area to live in when my son's and I join him in a few months. I have been looking at the statistics on a few areas, and have figured out that the towns that may work for us would be Gahanna, Westerville, and maybe Canal Winchester. I saw some data on Canal Winchester that said that there are 10 sex offenders living in that area, and being a small town, the ratio is 561 to 1. I think that seems really high, and wondered if anyone had any ideas on why it's so high.
I looked up Canal Winchester because the houses were older, and seemed like a lot of house for the money.
Thanks for listening, and I would appreciate any ideas/suggestions.

Canal Winchester is a neat little place. One of my very best friends lives there. Despite newer development on its outskirts, the older part of CW is still very charming, historic and retains its small-town character. It also has a nice downtown area with that classic "Hometown, USA" feel. Real estate is definitely cheaper than either Westerville or Gahanna. Every summer, the town's big parade takes place on Labor Day—sortof a unique tradition in these parts.

I had no idea about the sex offenders living there! But then...the main part of CW (the original town area) strikes me as the kind of place where most everyone knows their neighbors. You'd probably figure out pretty quickly who to be leery of...

Like I said, there's a lot of newer development on the outskirts of CW—particularly the commercial area out along Gender Rd. where it meets U.S. 33. Developers have also put up newer residential areas with that bland, anonymous suburbans-sprawl feel (McHouses)

Best of luck to you, CTQ1026!

Lanc

Thank you Lanc for your observations. My husband is now looking north of Columbus in the Delaware area. Do you know anything about that area?
Thanks,
Cathy

Sunbury is the place to buy if you want a nice, fairly well preserved small town character suburb. Most Columbus suburbs are sprawl on sterroids so Sunbury is in a league of it's own.

I'm wondering if this is the town, that's having tough times with the school budgeting? I heard something on the news last nite.

I've been to the area - and it just didn't faze me. Seemed kinda blah.....

Hi again Cathy,

Delaware is a nice little town, too! It's the seat of Delaware County, has a college (Ohio Wesleyan) and hosts the annual Little Brown Jug. Some nice historic homes can be found there, and there are things to do on a weekend or at night.

The 'burbs of Columbus are constantly sprawling north (kinda like weeds) but at least for now, there is still a decent stretch of rural land separating Delaware from metro Cbus.

Some parts of southern Delaware County are quite beautiful. Route 315 along the Olentangy River is designated as a state "scenic byway"...which may prevent it from being crapped up in the future, hopefully

All the best,
Lanc
