My roommate and I have old friends coming in from Vermont. We're looking for suggestions for good local breweries here in Columbus. When I was in Vermont, it was really easy to rattle off the local beers, but I haven't been able to develop that skill for Columbus yet. What are your favorites?

Ohio has a lot of great breweries, but strangely not many in Columbus. Columbus Brewing Company has a brewpub in the Arena District and their IPA is sublime....has that prototypical grapefruit-rind flavor which seems to typify IPAs in the Great Lakes region. There's also Elevator Brewery, which I've found just "okay", and Barley's...which I find to be a better restaurant than brewery. There are a couple newer ones I haven't tried yet, maybe others can chime in.
But overall it seems the Cleveland, Cincinnati & Dayton areas are moving a lot faster on the brewery thing than Columbus, which is odd.

There are a bunch of microbreweries in Columbus. Columbus Brewing Company is the best known. We also have Seventh Son, Elevator, Smokehouse Brewing Company, Land Grant (new), Four String, Wolf's Ridge, North High, and probably others I am forgetting. I'm not picky about beer so I can't help you out much with which ones to try, but I would start by Googling them and seeing what they have to offer.

I have heard good things about Rockmill Brewery and Zauber. Brother's Drake is cool, but it is mead not beer. There are several interesting brewery lists on google. This one has some good suggestions: Ohio Craft Beer :: Columbus City Guide

Columbus is far behind Cleveland and Cincinnati (especially Cincy) in this front. Zauber is a pretty good. Columbus Brewing is ok and Elavator is awful for it's beers but a good restaraunt imo.

I spent a couple hours at Zauber last Sunday. Good beer....both house-brewed and "guest" brews. They also serve cocktails. No kitchen but they do have food trucks on site often. You can also bring in your own food.

Cincy is just going crazy with new craft breweries. Seems like Cbus is doing just fine, too.

anyone tried Pigskin Brewery? There was a home brew blog that said they were coming to Dublin area then the project stalled and they switched to Gahanna. Haven't seen or heard anything since.

Anybody remember Growlers? The first microbrewery I visited in Columbus - back in 1989.

No sir/maam. Only growler I am aware of is the multi-quart jar one would bring to have filled up at your local microbrew.
