Whitehall- Good or Bad
Hi I'm going to move to the columbus area, and I'm curious about Whitehall, My husband seems to have found a nice townhome community in that area, and I was just curious, is it safe? I really don't want to live somewhere with alot of noise or hoodlums, so just curious. Any advice?

I've live in the Columbus area for about 20 years and worked on the East Side. Whitehall seems like it once was a nice working- to middle-class suburb, but it has fallen on hard times lately. I've noticed that Whitehall seems to have had a decided increase in crime during that time as well. The stats on this site seem to bear that out.

Thank you, so in other words, it's a bad area. I guess the saying that you get what you pay for is oh so true. Are there any areas in the Columbus zip that are ok? I really like the Gahanna, New Albany, Westerville, zone but it's a little pricy. Do you know of any decent apt. areas? I want decent schools too though.

Ok not all of Whitehall is a bad area. Sure there is some poverty in Whitehall and blue collar people, however, it is not an entire ghetto. There are parts of Whitehall that have middle class to upper middle class incomes. However, If you are looking for a true upper class white collar suburb then yes Whitehall is not your place.

True, but if the school system is a factor then Whitehall is not the place to be.
I'm sure you could find some places in Gahanna or Westerville. They both have some sort of decent priced housing or apartments. You may want to look up Christopher Wren (Gahanna) or Chestnut Hill (Columbus, Westerville schools) apartments but there are plenty more.

You're well-advised to avoid Whitehall, as others have already done. But if you'd like to be on the east side, Gahanna or Pickerington would be great alternatives
"Picktown" (Pickerington) is somewhat further out, but is almost all newer developments and its schools are well respected. It is part of Fairfield County.
Gahanna is an easy shot to almost everything via 670 or 270, and it has some nice affordable areas (along with some extremely wealthy enclaves). Its schools are also above average, and if you need to get to the airport for any reason...it's right there!
Even Reynoldsburg still has a nice residential areas, although I'd definitely stay east of Brice Rd. in R'burgh.

Not by any means is all of Whitehall 'bad'. The Fairway Blvd / Country Club Rd area has some very attractive homes and would be considered a middle to upper-middle class neighborhood. And there is certainly NOTHING wrong with being blue-collar. Just an observation that Whitehall (overall) has seemed to decline somewhat. That doesn't mean that things can't be turned around. I'll give the 'powers-that-be' in Whitehall credit for the nice work done on the Town & Country storefronts. Like I said, Whitehall (overall, not just parts of it) seems like it was a nice area at one time.
Right now, however, I'd advise looking into Gahanna, Pickerington or Reynoldsburg first - partly because of the school factor, too. Just my .02.

What you said!
Fwiw, I had a friend awhile back who grew up in that Fairway Blvd/Country Club area. Very nice! Pretty well tucked away, too. If you weren't looking for them, you would never know all those nice homes are even back there.

I live in Whitehall and have for 17 years. We are in the process of building five new schools in Whitehall for our children to attend. Our police force is one of the best and the friendliest. Our firefighters are tops here and I believe that they saved my life when I had to go to hospital for a heart attack. Whitehall cares about the people that live here and makes everyone welcome here.If you want a city that still cares about the public, move to Whitehall. Our schools are all going to be built new and the teachers are great too. The families support their children with the fact that they go to their games, softball, or football or whatever sport the child is involved with. We also have a Christmas thing where the children of Whitehall meet Santa and enjoy the day with him. We have parades here on the holidays and we have pride in our city. Whitehall is definitely a place to raise a family that is safe and secure.
