I didn't realize that Columbus is within 200 miles of five NFL cities. I'd imagine that the Bengals, Browns and Steelers would be the most popular. Would I be correct?

Paul Brown was at different times the head coach of the Buckeyes, Browns, and Bengals. When he also owned the Browns, he tried to get as many former Buckeyes as he could on his team, and even though that was 50 years ago, there is still a legacy of Buckeyes fans being Browns fans. However, with the new Browns having not been that great, most of the younger people, as well as the sensible Buckeye fans who don't riot, root for the Bengals or Steelers. Some people from western parts of Ohio may root for the Lions or Colts.

Does anybody know the Columbus TV ratings for Browns vs. Bengals vs. Steelers games? Several Ohio State alums play for the Steelers.

As a Browns fan, I know I don't watch Bengals or Steelers games most of the time. Except for gamblers and those with mixed allegiance, I would imagine that only the most committed NFL fans watch games for all three teams.

So TV ratings would seemingly be very definitive.

TV ratings would be a poor indicator since what game is on is largely driven by geography and scheduling voodoo. You could maybe look at SNF and MNF, but the Bengals and (especially) the Browns do not play in those time spots often, and if they do, it is often against one of the other teams we wish to study here.

I can't speak for Columbus but it seems strange that everyone I know in Dayton is a Browns fan, Browns games are also broadcast on WHIO-AM.

The Browns are the most popular NFL team in Columbus. After that, it's the Bengals, then the Steelers. After those three, I think it generally mirrors which teams are the most popular nation wide. FWIW, I am a Bengals fan. I would say it's about 35% Browns fans, 25% Bengals fans, 15% Steelers fans, and 25% other.
