My wife and I moved to Columbus in the past few months and are in a rental in Merion Village. We are both very comfortable here, and I think it might be the sweet spot for our particular tastes. In the future when we get ready to buy a house I would like to stay here but schooling is a concern. I walk by Southwood elementary most days of the week and it looks nice and the kids look generally well behaved and groomed, so I'm a little uncertain if it deserves its middling to poor reviews I've seen on it. I've also heard that most people in German Village send their kids to the private St Mary school - would that be open to a Merion Village kid?

We considered moving to Marion Village when we first moved to Columbus. I'm afraid that the school scores do, in most cases, reflect their performance. St. Mary's would definitely be an option for you. You could also try to lottery into the higher performing city schools. Otherwise, look at Clintonville or Grandview to stay close to downtown, keep a semi-urban feel, and have strong schools. Bexley, UA, Worthington, pockets of Westerville also have good public school systems. Also pockets of NW Cbus have good elementaries.

St. Mary's is a good parish school and it servers more than just German Village. I had a co-worker who sent her kids to St. Mary's and she liked it. You don't even need to belong to the parish to go there. Not sure if you have to pay a higher tuition though.

If you're curious about Southwood, schedule a tour with the principal, sit in on a class or two, and talk to parents of kids who currently go there. That will give you a much better feel for the school than ODE ratings and online reviews.
