And I am not working 50 or 60 hour weeks. That's absurd and leads to burnout. Been there, done that (at Deloitte).

But MAYBE if I was in a career field that I actually enjoyed, then maybe I would not mind working over 40 hours a week. But I still would not over do it. I don't understand how people have the energy to work 50 or 60 hour weeks, quite frankly. To me, it's extremely exhausting. I don't know how else to convey this to you.

I'd rather have strong work life balance than career advancement, any day. Working too much is not healthy, leads to burnout, obesity, depression and lack of time to do personal things in life. Not a desirable way to live IMO. My brother is a prime example. He dove in to his career, moved up to manager level and guess what? He gained 30 pounds in just a few years.
I thought your brother just got his first job in Wisconsin last year? Why did you pick accounting in the first place? Accounting can be a boring career that is not suited to everyone. Any thoughts on what you may like? You really need to do some serious sole searching. Jay

Well, I have three brothers and one sister. One brother is a project manager at Traveler's in Hartford. My other brother is an architect for Kohler in Wisconsin (his first job).

I chose accounting when I was 20 years old because I was excellent with math, numbers and enjoyed my entry level accounting courses very much. I was a top notch A+ student in my accounting courses. Unfortunately, the real world can be markedly different than college courses, in a misleading way. It simply wasn't what I expected. In the real world, accounting is FAR more complex, painful, frustrating and yes, boring.

I think the crux of the matter is that I'm a very spatial person, but accounting is a very nonspatial career, even though I'm good with numbers and rules. I'm more of a creative type than I once thought I was.

Accounting is perhaps one of the most (if not THE most) #1 career that people decide to change their career away from. Yes. It sucks that bad. And it's as bad as it sounds.

I don't want to be doing this crap for 36 more years.

I am considering using my move to Columbus as an opportunity to take advantage of the plethora of colleges and programs that are available here, to change my career once and for all into something that I would enjoy doing much more than accounting. I chose to stay and suffer with accounting for the past 9 years, for no reason other than wanting to live a comfortable lifestyle. But I am now realizing that even that doesn't ultimately make one fulfilled.

I'd rather be at staff level and be in good shape and look good for my age. Stop trying to force or push me into wanting career advancement in accounting. I don't want it.

Advancement is no longer an issue. Just keeping a job became one for you this week.

Well of course. My reputation on this forum is higher than most of these pundits, for a reason.
