Oh, I don't think the weather in C-bus is in any way "extreme"--just gray and blah. Lots of 35 degree overcast days. I actually wouldn't have minded a little *more* snow, because at least you can do stuff in snow.

I think for a lot of people OSU and "Buckeyes" are equated with sports, most commonly football. (I don't know of anyone who dislikes an academic institution.) And living now in a city with an absolutely rabid following of a football team I am ambivalent about (the Redskins) I can understand that feeling.
What I could never understand, and this was true while I lived in Columbus, was the number of people who never attended OSU (or whose children or parents did not attend) and yet were die-hard fans of its sports teams. And I'm not talking about the people who tune in to watch the game on Saturday and maybe read up on the goings-on with the team in the paper. I'm talking about the people who call into sports talk radio programs in April venting about this or that recruit, the people who camp out in front of the stadium beginning on Friday afternoons, the ones who drive around town year-round with the fight song blaring out of their cars, the ones who make wagers on the Spring Game...and they have no affiliation to the school, other than the fact that they reside in the same metro area. That I don't get at all.

Yeah, the most rabid fans are people who never went there. In a few weeks we will be treated to people wearing muck fishigan, or just plain outright fyck michigan, hats, plate and shirts.
If they are such hard core fans, how come they never went to Ohio state. I mean it's pretty easy to get into if you are an Ohio resident.

Because not everybody can afford to go away from home for school. Not everyone in Ohio lives in the Columbus metro. Ohio State football is ingrained into the culture of the state, so many remain fans of the Buckeyes in addition to their alma mater. Think all Notre Dame, Miami, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas and Penn State fans attended those schools?

Not saying OSU is unique in this regard, it's simply what I was exposed to. And I find it very curious.

Actually, to make main campus, you need to have a 28 ACT (out of 36, or roughly 80th percentile) and a "good" grade point average (top 20% of class is what they state), which are also the basic requirements for OSU's scholars program. However, anyone can go to a branch campus of OSU, such as those located in Newark, Mansfield, or Lima, and transfer to Columbus after a year of two, and they are guaranteed acceptance.
Also, a lot of OSU spirit is interpreted into state spirit and an "Ohioan" thing nowadays, too, meaning that many diehard supporters are just simply sports fanatics that like having a good team to root for (after all, our state is stuck with hosting the Bengals and Browns... ).
