Columbus is what I call a "fake wanna be city". It has far too many new builds that turn into cookie cutter nothing neighborhoods. If I see one more M/I home, lifestyle community condominium, or oversized new build houses that no one can afford I am going to scream! The segregation is very real, but people pretend it does not exist. When people see black people moving in they quickly shoot up the for sale signs. If you are an accomplished minority, well educated, earning a living, And last but not least, Ohio State everything as far as the eye can see. As if there is nothing else going on.

I believe that segregation is by choice. There are plenty of nice subdivisions with mostly black families who have decided that's what they wanted. So, that kind of stuff cuts both ways.

I take no umbrage at that, as long as people do it of their own free will. It would be a whole different story if that was happening by government fiat.

BTW, what goes on in Columbus is nothing compared to Cleveland. The east/west (or black/white, if you prefer) divide in Cleveland is much more pronounced than anything you'll find in Columbus.

This is a bit humorous. This is the case in most cities where a major college is located, especially if that college has a successful sports program(s). It is true in Tuscaloosa, Al., Chapel Hill, N.C., and even in Lawrence, Ks. Such is the nature of the love affair many Americans have with college sports. Nothing unusual about this being the case with OSU/Columbus.

I don't agree with that, there are pleny of cities that have good programs and don't go crazy and consumed with them. University of Pittsburgh/Pittsburgh(good basketball program, good football past), University of Miami/Miami,Fla.(good football program), UCLA/Los Angeles(good basketball program), USC/Los Angeles(good football program, Xavier/Cincinnati(good basketball program), and etc. Columbus seems to take it over board. All the cities you named are small towns, not a major city. They have a reason to go crazy over their teams because there is nothing else there, but Columbus is a city that shouldn't be consumed by one college team.

Agreed - just moved from the Atlanta area. There is a huge obsession with UGA and Athens is 45 minutes from Atlanta proper. The Triange area of NC (Raleigh - Durham - Chapel Hill) is insane right now with March Madness. Duke fans (especially after last night's game) are in full force right now!

west - you need to lighten up! OSU is the largest U around - what do you expect?

Again - agree. Go to the Atlanta forum and you'll see the same thing. There are large, upscale neighborhoods in the southern ATL suburbs that are majority black. The northern ATL suburbs are mainly white. Of course, there are many areas that are diverse and everyone is happy.

Self segregation is normal. People typically choose to live around those folks that share their same values and backgrounds.

This type of culture / lifestyle is everywhere. People are flocking to the South and that type of construction is exactly what you get in Atlanta, Raleigh, Charlotte, Pheonix, Austin.......

We live (and it may be coming to a halt) a very transient country. Everybody is drawn to a "better" life. IMO, one of the many reasons our country is in a financial crisis...

The new builds is a good thing for Columbus - don't you think? Is proves Columbus is growing and is not the typical midwestern city that is hurting.

#1
Pittsburgh- Crazy about the steelers
Miami/Los Angeles- Both have pro teams, and are too big to be crazy about one team
Cincinnati- Bengals, Reds and Ohio State

#2
If Columbus had a pro football, baseball or basketball team maybe we would be so crazy about the buckeyes, but it is the closest thing we will have to a pro team

#3
I bet you have never been to an OSU football game... if you did i thing you would probably be singing a different tune- I have been to Reds, Indians, Bengals, Crew and many other sporting events, an none are as exciting as OSU

#4
None of those teams have as much tradition (founded in 1870) or help the community as much as OSU

#5
OSU is one of only three colleges to win national championships in baseball, football and basketball, the only ever to appear in football and basketball championships in the same year, OSU hold national championships in 14 different sports, and has appeared in the football national championship in 3 out of the last 6 years and a major bowl game every year

#6
Ohio State is the largest University in the country, was labeled by Sports Illustrated as being "The Program" due to the unsurpassed facilities, unparalleled amount of men's and women's sport teams, their success, and an impressive fan base, and ESPN ranks the Ohio State/Michigan rivalry game as the greatest in all of sports

So the real question is that if we have what can be described as one of the best if not the best athletic programs in the nation, How is it is not ok for the city of Columbus to go crazy over, especially since we have no pro teams that even have one tenth of the reputation of the buckeyes

If we have something that good, we'd be crazy if we didn't get get excited

Black/White divide? I dont think a lot of people on here are too educated about Cleveland. In the city its not like the Eastside is where every black person lives and the Westside is completely white or something. The Eastside is about 75% black, but the Westside is very diverse. The Westside is like 50% white, 20% black, and 30% hispanic/Other. Also Elyria, Lorain, Oberlin all have a large amount of blacks and there in the westside area. The Eastside suburbs are very diverse most the inner ring ones have a large amount of blacks and whites.
