Where in Columbus if money is no object?
We live in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago and are considering a move to Columbus. It would not be ideal but it would be great job opp for my husband. We are less concerned about cost than about finding the ideal neighborhood. Here's what would be important to us.
Not suburbs.
Not to far from The Wellington School (younger child)
Near a good public high school (older child)
Things to walk/bike to SAFELY
Large homes for sale..4000-10000 sq ft. (6000-7000 would be ideal.)
Preferrably not cookie cutter, homes with history/character preferred..even if that means work to be done..but again not in an unsafe area.
I would prefer as much culture as possible..My kids have known nothing but Chicago. They've never hung out in a mall, I'm not sure they even know what a strip mall is..and they love art and theater and libraries.
Any suggestions on how we can make this work?

You are definitely going to want to check out Upper Arlington, and possibly the Grandview/Marble Cliff area.

This appears to be pretty much a lock, Upper Arlington in the area south of Lane Ave.

Actually, for a house that size you'll need to look around Onandaga Drive, probably. It's just slightly north of Lane Avenue in Upper Arlington.
Have you checked the HER realty site?

What about Bexley? Old money, old houses but very very nice old houses. Good schools.

We live in Bexley and love it. It sounds like it would be a good fit for you, but it looks like The Wellington School is on the NW side of town and we are on more on the east side of downtown.
Upper Arlington sounds like it would work for you, as the others have suggested.
Good luck!

Although the original poster mentioned no suburbs, I'd have to agree about Upper Arlington. Great city, great schools.

Okay none of these posters gave you recommendations that are not suburbs.
If you want a large nice city neighborhood look at the following:
Old Beechwold (has actually decent columbus city schools) and is family oriented. All homes look over a ravine, but there are only a few large homes here. Plus this is located next to the nice middle class neighborhoods of Clintonville and Beechwold. This neighborhood is located north of OSU along High St (columbus' main central city street.) The local high school is Whetstone High School. It is ranked well, but has a diverse population as most columbus city school high schools do. I would suggest visiting it and seeing what you think. Columbus Alternative or Centennial High School are both ranked better and your child can attend them with the district's open enrollment policy.
The most known, well off, neighborhoods of the central city are Victorian and German Village. Both have parks, close community, private schools traditions, etc.. I would look into both of those. IF your kids will use public schools, they could use the open enrollment policy of the Columbus City Schools by going to one of the better ranked city schools (like Winterset Elementary with an A state grade on the NW side of the district, or Columbus Alternative High School located in Linden with over 100 percent quality rating from the state.) These schools are much closer to Beechwold and if you live in German or Victorian Village you will find that it is a decent bus ride to the better CCS.

True, UA, Grandview and Bexley are not in the City of Columbus, but they are close to the character of Lincoln Park. Grandview or Bexley are probably closest. UA is a terrific community, but is less an analogue of Lincoln.
