I lived in DC for 7 years...
DC
Likes- what can i say, DC has it all. Shopping, restaurants, bars, stuff to do between Boston, Bmore,NY, Philly, Atlantic City, VA, Ocean City, Virginia Beach, and Charlotte.
-Diversity of not just races but nationalities
-Everybody has a degree. You don't even have to ask
-Job/Career opportunities. I get 20 calls from DC for my resume for every columbus call.
-History of the city and redevelopment of poor/traditionally high crime areas...
-weather-spring is 4 weeks, rains in the winter and summers are hot and last till october.
-metro-subway system is the best...don't even need a car..
Hates-Traffic is insane
-Cost of living..homes start out at half a million it seems
-pollution from cars and management of chesapeake bay
-People are career driven and base friendships on who can benefit who career wise.
-Gangs and random stupid shootings
Columbus-I love Columbus...its a big city but feels small
-focus on getting people to live downtown and revitalization
-tech/health care industry development
-diversity
-parks
-crime not bad
Dislikes-
Everything is chain/retail..dc has a ton of independents
Too much sprawl...
job market can be hectic and slow
nightlife scene
-need a car for everything...no metro system

I've lived in both places.
The Columbus area is much smaller than the DC area.
Columbus has cheaper cost-of-living than DC.
Columbus has a great metropark system, much better than DC in my opinion.
Columbus has a good job market, but DC has a better one.
DC has a better transportation system.
DC is within a 2 hour drive of bay/ocean and mountains.
Both have access to good hospitals.
Shopping is good depending on where you live in either of the cities.
Nightlife is okay in Columbus, great in DC.
Dulles airport is much bigger and better than Port Columbus, but you have to drive quite aways to get to it in Virginia.
I can no longer vouch for the quality of air or water in either place.
Columbus is MUCH safer than DC.
For me, I would want to live in DC if I was single and young. If I was raising a family, I would prefer the Columbus area.
