Relocating to Columbusbut clueless....
We need help from any and all native Columbusians! What town has the best (older tudor and colonials) homes in Columbus area? What town is the best for young families? We are coming from out-of-control expensive Northeast and are hoping we can find a bigger and better house in Columbus area. We have kids and are looking for a good Catholic school. Help!

Hello and welcome to the area! I moved here from Chicago 3 years ago and love it. You will find Columbus to be a hidden jewel. Lower cost of living, much less traffic and wonderful people. I myself live in New Albany but think from what you described Upper Arlington might be a great bet. They have older, beautiful homes and one of the best school districts around. Bexley has a large Jewish population (I am guessing some good Catholic schools as well) and beautify older homes too. I recruit people to Columbus to work for a Fortune 500 company here from all over the country and haven't heard anyone say they regret moving here. Enjoy!

Thanks so much chicagoerin! We are finding that a bunch of our friends are fleeing CT/NJ/NY/Long Island area for Texas/Ohio/NC areas. I am very nervous, but I think'll be for the best.

kabou, care to share why so many of your friends are fleeing CT/NY areas to other places like Columbus?
I have noticed an uptick in out-of-state license plates since last year. I am actually looking to flee Columbus one day!

sftong,
i think people are fleeing because the cost of living. home prices went way up, but salaries haven't increased as much. also, commuting is a *****-manhattan is an island so it's not easy to get on and off that island every day. most people inour area commute 1 plus hour (by train) each way every day-and we live 15 miles outside of NYC! it's hard to get to the beach or the mountains or anything around here. the beach is virtually unaffordable to most-i mean, who can buy a house in the hamptons? taxes are steep. we pay 20k on a 750k house.
i think people just want to spend less time commuting, have more money in savings, and have some time (and extra $) to enjoy life with their families so they look for places in the US where that way of life isn't unreasonable. also, between govenors mcgreevey (ex NJ) and spitzer (ex NY) we are the laughing stock of civilization!

Hello! I'm middle 20's, single (sorry, can't help much w/catholic school info) and have lived in columbus for about 4years. I have found the Grandview, Upper Arlington, Worthington, Dublin, and Powell areas all to be very safe.....i feel comfortable walking/jogging at night in these areas; especially upper arlington.

The best neighborhoods in the city of Columbus, safe, nice homes/apartments/condos, walkable, tree lined streets, and nice retail strips are:
Clintonville/Beechwold
Victorian Village/Italian Village/Short North
German Village
Merion Village
Grandview Heights (Columbus) area
NW Columbus (Bethel/Henderson Rd.)
also Berwick is a nice neighborhood south of Bexley, in Columbus, but lacks a nice retail strip. However, the nice Bexley retail area is nearby
All of these are pretty urban in nature, but very nice and gentrified. Only the NW Columbus area, and parts of the Grandview and Berwick, have a suburban feel
