Default Worried about New Albany?

Hi, we are moving to New Albany from Pennsylvania and are very excited about move. However, I'm also nervous. Can some moms who live there tell me their thoughts on the area with regards to kids, parents, moms, the area in general? My biggest fear is that we move there and feel the pressure of "keeping up with the joneses" (not that we would try, we're not that type of people), or that our children are constantly pressured in school with all the affluence there. Thanks

I don't know if you have moved already and I'm not a mom but I don't think you need to worry about New Albany. Not everyone who lives in New Albany is affluent. I work at the public library there and I've seen all kinds of people. We've got the rich kids that people associate with the village but we've also got skaters, punks and other kids who aren't as wealthy. We also have a lot of home schooled kids and those children are really well-rounded. New Albany has great schools and an overall great community, so don't let the image intimidate you. I don't want to sound like I'm advertising (which I am not) but stop at the library or the Market Square area in general after you've moved. A lot of the moms hang out there and they all seem to get along. Good luck!

Default Worried about New Albany

Hi!
I just came across this post and wanted to share my 2c.
We live near New Albany. DH is studying to be a minister soon. Living outside New Albany and going to the main shopping area of Easton, I believe u will feel the pressure, but I think that is really good for kids to experience. Especially if u are the type of parents who don't give in to every demand. They will have a tough time at first, but be stronger when they graduate and get out in the "real world". so I think it is worth all the effort of resisting "keeping up". Most people will not understand why, but be proud that your family will have great values and the kids will value things they get, not just demand them because their friends have them.

Based on the date, I think the OP has already moved to the area...

I will add this about New Albany ...
We were invited to Holiday party there. It was an Open House type thing with co-workers (us), neighbors, and friends in attendance. I was stunned at the size of the homes. The home we attended the party at was gorgeous and the hosts we very hospitable. I really had my reservations about going because of what I had heard about the area - that it was just loaded with "snotty rich people". To be quite honest, most everyone we met was very nice and we had a wonderful time.

I think the pressure to "keep up" these days is everywhere. Adults, kids - everyone has seen their fair share of it. It just one of those things in life you are going to encounter - you just have to be a level-headed adult & parent and "do the right thing" - whatever that is.

I've met some wealthy people with "personality problems" - and I've met my share of lower income folks with nasty attitudes as well. You really don't know what anyone is like until you get to know them anyway.

I wish I could afford to live in New Albany - it would just put me that much closer to Easton.

I hear that Wexner has done some major reorganization leaving a good many executives out of work. Executives whom he insisted build homes and live in New Albany. Now that a chunk of those folks have been released, there's no one who wants to, or can afford to, buy all those big, very expensive New Albany homes. Wexner manufactured a demand for those homes and a few years later forced a vaccum in the very same area he created demand.

New Albany may be getting more affordable very soon. Alleged snottiness may be getting a new attitude adjustment courtesy of the new New Albany economy. Stay tuned.
