Default Renting Season

I am looking for an apartment near Victorian Village/Short North/Grandview, etc, but am finding it a lot more difficult to find affordable ($500-$600) places renting out now then when I looked in late-Spring and early Summer. I assume this is because many landlords have adopted OSU's rental cycle. I would prefer an apartment that has some character (ie, not the old complex's near Thurber). I was wondering if it will be easier to find a place if I wait it out for a couple of months and find somewhere temporary?

Also, any recommendations on what areas to look (especially ones I may have overlooked)? I am a recent college grad with a ton of student loans, so price is a bigger consideration than comfort. I lived on campus for a while and don't have much for anyone to steal so "some" crime is OK, but I'd like to feel relatively safe.

Thank you for any advice!!!
