That explains a lot. Thanks

The southern portion of North Linden is close to majority black though. I know South Linden is mostly black but the poverty and crime rate are both pretty high.

To the thread starter look into the area around Westerville rd. near woodsedge Sunbury and around Mc Cutcheon rd and Oak Spring. I see it on the map and it seems to be one of the nicest African American neighborhoods around Columbus. If Im not mistaken its Parks Mills/Mifflinville, its on the NE side.

i think its whitehall. but i live in baltimore now and am trying to find out some of the same info more about jobs though. i grew up in columbus and have'nt been back since 96 and i miss the pace and the cost of living is so much better. dc baltimore area sounds like something you would like because of the black ratio but columbus has what your looking for. try reynoldsburg. i lived in south linden but because you have kids i wouldnt do that if its the same as it was in the 90s

I think that you will still find that the Northland area is still mostly white. There maybe some pockets that I do not know about that meet your 60% to 80% black. The crime rate is going up in the northland area. Good luck.

I mostly agree.

But as a sidenote, if you know about stats, 70% poverty is a HUGE exaggeration. For South Linden I would guess about 40%, and most the links I found say around 25%-37% for south linden, bad but nowhere near 70%.

HaHa I was just making a guess but it might be around 45%??? Everyone i've ever met from south linden was poor.

Have you ever seen the big painting on 18 ave in Columbus?

What area or city in America would you think is 70% poverty?.....if there is one

painting on 18 ave? was it on Cleveland? I havent been to Columbus in a little while but Ive been down that way a lot, main friend in that area lives near 26 ave. I remember a painting somewhere around that area but nothing specifically.

To get to 70% poverty you would have to break it down pretty far, probably to block groups and census tracts (once in a while). The only entire neighborhoods you will find with 70% poverty are ones almost entirely made up of public housing. When an area gets above 25% or so its usually considered a poor neighborhood as it would have over twice the US average poverty rate so you can imagine how bad 70% would be. Cleveland has neighborhoods over 60%, of course areas on the southside of Chicago and the Bronx (now, but especially in the past), some areas in Detroit also. But there are very few urban areas in the US like that. Columbus can get rough, but the worst is maybe 50% for a neighborhood.

Default cols neighborhood

I don't know of a neighborhood for you, but I did want to add that I'm not sure if you'll find what you're looking for near Dublin (where you work). Most of the places people have been suggesting are on the east side, and Dublin is on the northwest side.

I guess Northland is on the north side, so it'd probably be closer to Dublin than Reynoldburg, Canal Winchester, etc BUT the Northland has it's share of crime, for sure. Maybe not as much as the Linden area, but I don't know, I wouldn't call Northland a very safe area. Northland is not as safe as Reynoldsburg or Canal Winchester.

At the Ohio Dept of Education's website, it says that 3.3 percent of Dublin Schools children are black, 3.4 are hispanic, 14 percent are Asian, and 75 percent are white. So that probably wouldn't meet what you're looking for. Although I live in Dublin and it's really a very nice place to live. Wright Elementary in Dublin is 14 percent black, 30 percent asian, hispanic, and multiracial, and 55 percent white. It has the highest percentage of black students.

Reynoldsburg schools are 31 percent black, 56 percent white, the rest multiracial, asian, hispanic. Slate Ridge Elementary in Reynoldsburg is 35% black, 45% white, 13% multiracial, and 5% hispanic. It also looks like it might be a new school, which would be nice. Slate Ridge had the most black children, with French Run next.

Westerville Schools has 20 percent black, 70 percent white, 10 percent hispanic and asian. BUT, there are areas in Westerville that have more black children - but probably not predominantly black. And Westerville would be closer to Dublin. Right now I don't have time to look up the percentages in Westerville, but here is the website you can go to:

Default County Report Card Home Page

You choose Westerville from the drop down menu, and it will give you a list of all the Westerville schools. To find out the percentage of black students at each school, go to each school's "Building Report" section and choose 2007-2008. A "report card" will open up for that school. Scroll down until you see "Your School's Students" and you will see the percentage break down.

So if I were you I'd find the school that has the percentage of black children you are most comfortable with, and then look in that school's neighborhood.

To be honest, I don't think you'll find an area that is 60 - 80% black that is not inner city, which you said you didn't want. In my opinion, if safety is your biggest concern, with higher percentage of blacks your second highest concern, Reynoldburg schools would be best, but Reynoldsburg is far away from Dublin.

Westerville Schools would probably be second best in terms of percentage of black children, but better than Reyndoldsburg in terms of safety, and it would be closer to Dublin.

That's my 2 cents! Good luck!
Linda
