With me not being from Columbus, alot of these posts are totally going over my head, but its interesting none the less. I recently found out my job will be moving to Hilliard. From my first impression its not very diverse town and I am not thrilled about the ideal of living there. Just a couple more questions, what "side" of town is Hilliard considered to be (North, East, ect) and are there any neighborhoods closer to Hilliard that fit my original description? Thnks.

Hilliard is NW of Columbus and is a pretty diverse region. There are pockets in the Hilliard area that are actually Columbus but are part of the Hilliard school district, this wouldn't be bad since Hilliard has a pretty high rated school system. If you go further N of Hilliard you end up in Dublin which isn't what you are looking for and if you go further W you'll end up in Plain City which is still a pretty rural area but is growing.
If you really want to stick in a mostly black dominant area then your best bets are in the E. side areas and in that area of Canal you were looking at. Mainly because there are a lot of newer apartments and houses in that area where the Canal and E. side area is merging.

Okay, you do not need to move to Canal Winchester, that will only raise your gas costs (it is very very far out from the central city.)
Some posters here are recommending 99percent white suburbs like Hilliard. Do not listen to these posts. They are well intended but lack knowledge of the actual city of Columbus, which has many diverse and culturally interesting neighborhoods.
Columbus is lucky to have many neighborhoods that are very diverse and full of middle class African Americans. Some, that are more unfamiliar with the city, confuse the high poverty areas with areas that are simply diverse but not as economically challenged.
The east side areas, east of Bexley, like Berwick, Berwin, Eastmoor, and further east (near Brice Rd.) have many decent apartment complexes and homes. I would look into these neighborhoods. These neighborhoods make up a huge area, so it could take some time exploring, but atleast you are pointed in the right directions.
On the north side, The northland area (161& Cleveland) and further north of there is all very middle class and has a very diverse mix of races and ethnic groups coexisiting. Northland, Devonshire, and Forest Park Neighborhoods are highly recommended.
I would recommend these areas first.

I wouldn't exactly call 161/Cleveland middle class, Forest Park has a lot of nice houses and one set of low income apartments. Other than the apartments nothing diverse about it.
If you go through Devonshire on the right day it probably looks like a pretty nice neighborhood. And it does have some nice houses and nice residents but it's going down hill and probably will become a all out "hood" soon. It's a dope boys paradise being sandwiched in by 161, shrock, Karl rd and 71. From the top where motel 6 is at with prostitute's and crackheads to the end where the Sharon green apartments are. There's plenty of black people around, But i don't think that's what she's looking for

I do not believe that you need to move all the way to Brice Rd. to find a diverse, middle class area of Columbus. If you look at demographics you do not. However, Brice Rd. is as far as I would recommend. Canal Winchester begins a little further east and south/.

I'll agree that you don't need to move to Brice Rd. to find diversity, the city as a whole is very diverse and many areas are rich in culture from many races.
I'm just saying that Canal/E. Side isn't a bad deal since with all the expansion of those two areas into each other there are a lot of newer homes and apartments open. Having lived on the E. side for a number of years before I moved to Hilliard I and my gf can attest to that horrid drive to Dublin from the E. Side area during rush hour, not to mention traffic between Main and Refugee on Brice/Gender Rd. can be a real *****..

maybe a little help
Hi..I'm new here to posting and will be moving back to the columbus area in June from southern Ohio. I am familiar with Reynoldsburg and i think you might find what you're looking for there. It has decent schools, affordable apartments and a large black population too. It is close to everything! I like Reynoldsburg because it doesn't have a huge crime rate and the schools are good with lots of resourses and innovative/advanced classes. I know happy white and black people there Mary Ann
