I wasn't aware of this open enrollment policy the schools have it's something I'll be sure to look into. I would request to break my lease and move but it's not the lease I signed with the home owners thats my problem it's my job it's very costly for them to move employees and set them up with our work at home office...computer, business internet and hardphone so when I accepted the 90% work at home position I signed a 2 year contract with my job. The good part is that I don't have to travel in the office and working at home has been great for me I have only been to New Albany for inter office work once since we moved here...so we are just patiently a waiting August 2010. I had an alarm system installed which makes me feel a little better....and the Easton shopping area LOVE IT...i just make sure i'm home before dark!

Wow I can't image that people are still moving to these places in Columbus since they cost so much to even rent. I've seen houses on cleveland ave and 2nd ave being rented for $700 dollars a month, mostly by rich whites who don't even live close.
You are bound to witness a muder, shooting, brake-in or even a drive-by if you live in that area, too bad you didn't move closer to broad. In the 1980's Fairwood ave and livingston ave used to be one of the hottest spots for crack in Ohio, due to the FNL bloods. And since that time theres crackheads everywhere and on every street that touchs Livingston, Main and Mt.vernon theres a gang of some sort. Good your children don't go to any of the schools around there because thats the age kids start to talk about gangs and drugs over there. I know a little about your area like theres alot of black culture in E. Columbus since it used to be a refuge for slaves back in the 1800's, you can still see alot of the houses along Livingston ave that used to help feed, clothed and protect slaves....Just to bad the area is so bad.

Both are safe. Have many upper class blacks. For example, the former Columbus school board president, the police chief's son, and mayor's mother-in-law all reside in Eastgate. The mayor himself resides in Berwick.
Back in the 70's when whites moved out of these areas, it was the black doctors, lawyers, and accountants that bought up the homes. Now though, some whites and gays are moving in because these places offer great value.

I'm not sure why street creed always says the schools are open enrollment. Like you can go choose any school you want, You have to put your name into a lottery and be blindly selected out of hundreds of other kids. If your not chosen you have to go to the areas assigned school.

Eastgate is quite a small neighborhood (i.e. too small to have "parts"). Do you mean Old Town East?
I'm sure there are some houses in Eastgate that are not well kept. Those are usually the one's where an older person has died and the children take over the house and don't maintain it.
Not all the houses there are great. Most are modest, but overall it's much nicer and safer than other parts of OTE (say along Mt. Vernon for ex).

At the same time I would like to be away from te downtown/inner city areas. Is this possible in Columbus? My children are young so I am also searching for good preschools/kindergarden programs that are racially diverse as well. Some of the apartment complexes in the Refugee/Gender (near Eastland Mall) areas looked pretty nice. Does anyone know the name of this part of town and whether it is high crime or not? Any sincere input is appreciated. Thanks

Are there any white people out there that do not take umbrage at such a blatantly racist and anti-white post as this? If a white person openly stated an outrageous preference to live in a neighborhood that was 60-80% white, they would be prosecuted for committing a hate crime. Lady, I can't believe that you would have this kind of audacity and no one challenge you on it. What kind of idea are you communicating to your children, that white people aren't fit to live with?

This entire thread is ridiculous and probably should be deleted. Black or white, just go to college and stop having so many brats and you will not end up in the slums making a living cleaning toilets. End of story.

I do understand what the OP is saying and for trhe record many whites prefer to live in 60 to 80% white areas.
Also, who cares if she wants to live around mostly blacks. That holds true for most people about their own race, including you.
