All big cities in Ohio are the same.........and even they have the same race stats 50/50 white and black.

With me not being from Columbus, alot of these posts are totally going over my head, but its interesting none the less. I recently found out my job will be moving to Hilliard. From my first impression its not very diverse town and I am not thrilled about the ideal of living there. Just a couple more questions, what "side" of town is Hilliard considered to be (North, East, ect) and are there any neighborhoods closer to Hilliard that fit my original description? Thnks.

My response is a little late but I wanted to respond becuase I just came out of the same situation. I was relocated by my employer to Columbus just this past year. In fact I suspect we may work for the same company being that we will be moving to Hilliard as well. At any rate, coming from a city with a large black population andbeing a single black female I was interested in some of the same things that you are. However, I actually chose to live in Worthington which IS NOT majority black in any neighborhood. I am close to 270. My rent is reasonable ($695 2 bR 1 1/2 bath w/ basement) and my neighborhood is safe ad quiet. The people around here are very nice including the retail community. The schools are good and it's a 15-20 minute drive to my job in Dublin. There is a lot of shopping in the area too. I really do miss being around more black people on a day to day basis but I could not find anything with a larger black population that wouldn't make my commute longer. I have to travel to see any significant number of black people but I am adjusting. My son actually attends a home daycare with a black family in Westerville. We both get serviced at a black barbershop down Cleveland avenue south of 161. I visit Eastland mall because they offer more clothing with an "urban" flair if you will.
I understand what you are looking for but would encourage you to expand your options. You can still have the interaction you want if you seek it. The Urban League, NAACP have chapters here along with several BGLO alumnae chapters so there is the opportunity to have positive social and political interaction. Also check out columbusblack.net - Home I subscribed to their mailing list so I get updates on events of interest to Black Columbus that are going on. Best of luck!

An area that immediately comes to mind is the Northland area, between I-71, and Cleveland Aveue, along MOrse Rd. and 161. It is not crime free, but it is not terribly high in crime. I don't know exact stats, but I wouldn't guess 60-80% black but maybe 40-50?

I second this area. Northland is a diverse neighborhood. It is actually less than 60 percent black, maybe even less than 50 percent, but many younger families and those living in the rental housing are black while ownership homes tend to be more white families.

Shoot, you know I also almost forgot about Whitehall. I know it gets a bad reputation for high crime, but having lived there for several years, I can tell you it is not anywhere close as bad as the media and some people who live in the upper middle class burbs portray it. And the demographics have shifted over the last ten years, from a large majority white to a very high proportion of minorities, mostly black, latino. The schools are not their best feature, but they have been improving and all 5 buildings will be rebuilt in the next several years. It is far from downtown and has easy access to I-70, 270 and 670. I am not sure if the OP has already made her move, so forgive me. Just thought I would throw that out there!

People like streetcrud are why I think Columbus is xenophobic.
