Black mother trying to find a good Columbus neighborhood (frank post).
Hello, I'm a mother of 3 and I am looking to relocate to columbus. I visited last weekend but I still know little about the city. I'm being honest about my preferences here so if you are offended please don't reply. I would like to be in a predominately Black neighborhood (at least 60-80%) that is relatively safe and clean. At the same time I would like to be away from te downtown/inner city areas. Is this possible in Columbus? My children are young so I am also searching for good preschools/kindergarden programs that are racially diverse as well. Some of the apartment complexes in the Refugee/Gender (near Eastland Mall) areas looked pretty nice. Does anyone know the name of this part of town and whether it is high crime or not? Any sincere input is appreciated. Thanks

Im more familiar with the Cleveland area but Ill try to help you out.
I would say areas of North Linden or Northland/Minerva Park. Both those areas seem to be predominately black with a relatively low poverty rate, although Im not entirely sure about the crime rate. But again Im not completely familiar with specific areas of Columbus.

thanks for the replies. What about the area of Canal Winchester? The apartments I was referring to (Kensington Commons) lists the city as being Canal Winchester. The townhomes look new and the neighborhood seemed to have plenty people of color. Any info?

North Linden is 75% white and has pretty high crime rates but northland is mostly black and is a much safer place to live.

I guess not huh... . Its crazy in Columbus because it seems every few streets youre in a different neighborhood with a totally different culture. What area is considered Northland? And how far is it from Dublin (where I work). Thanks

Part of Canal Winchester is getting absorbed by the east side of Columbus which is mostly black. Independence high school is a largely black school, there are some white, and it isn't a huge difference but mostly black.
Refugee and Gender is one of the areas still called Canal, but it is nothing more than an extension of the E. side.
