Default moving to c-bus...

hello there...my husband and i are seriously considering columbus as our next home...we have been trying to find some housing online, but having some problems...we want a safe area (obviously) but fun...we are 23 and 24 so still young...we have been looking for a loft but not having much luck...but a house in a really cool area would be just as awesome...we would like to live in an area either like downtown or an "art district" or something along those lines...or something with a vintage feel...any ideas or advice from anyone would be very much appreciated...thanks!

I vote Short North by a landslide. Grandview is nice too, if the SN isn't an option.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see a price range you are looking for. Are you wanting to buy or rent?

If you are looking for something a little more affordable, in gentrified central city terms, then there are subset neighborhoods of the more "known" ones.

In the Short North:
Look Into: Italian Village, Specifically northern Italian Village (just south of 5th Ave.)

Look into: Dennison Place, the northern section of Victorian Village.
If you go north of West 5th Ave and south of West 8th Ave, you will find a neighborhood more diverse than the rest of Victorian Village (being closer to Ohio State but not totally dominated by a student population.)
There are many homes and condos here that have just been built or renovated. The West sides of 5th to 8th are safe and in good shape. Many get these streets confused with EAST 8th, 7th, etc.. which are in a neighborhood called Weiland Park (known as one of the most dangerous areas of the north side.)
Weiland Park begins at EAST 5th ave. Everything south of East 5th is Italian Village and a great area.

For Clintonville:
Look into OLD NORTH COLUMBUS

Some of the best deals on homes, many great properties waiting for a renovation, can be found in Old North Columbus.

Many confuse this area with the Ohio State University Residential District.

Old North Columbus and South Clintonville have many diverse housing options, beautiful ravines, affordable prices, and an area with increasing home ownership.

Boundaries

Old North Columbus' boundaries begin NORTH of Woodruff Ave and South of Arcadia Ave. South of the neighborhood is the University District and north of the neighborhood is the popular Clintonville neighborhood.

Old North Columbus includes several smaller neighborhoods within these general boundaries including; the Iuka Ravine, Indianola Forest, Oakland & Northwood Ave, and Glen Echo neighborhoods.

Other neighborhoods within Old North Columbus include Washington Beach, Washington Bluffs, So-Hud, and AwesomeTown. Washington Beach is the dominant neighborhood as well as the only place in the world named after a fictional location in a video game

The Neighborhood

Old North Columbus traditionally has a higher percentage of homeownership than the core campus area to the south. However, it combines the diversity and liveliness of an urban academic feel with the tranquility of a quiet family neighborhood.

Old North Columbus is home to three Columbus Public Schools; Medary Elementary, North High and the Special Needs Center, all of which are historically significant structures. It also has several churches, restaurants and other small businesses along High Street and Indianola Avenue.

For German Village:

Look into: Merion Village
Merion Village is a neighborhood just south of German Village. The area has been on the upswing, with many younger couples and young professionals buying renovated homes and properties. Housing prices are more affordable, than German Village, and you still located near all of the shops and restaurants of the village and High St.

All of these neighborhoods are adjacent to or in the boundaries of the more popular neighborhoods, but will put you into an area that is on the upswing with a great diversity in housing options. If you mention this to your relator, or do a google search you will find more information.

I would shoot for the southern portion of Clintonville between Weber and Arcadia before looking into Old North Columbus south of Arcadia. It gets pretty run down the closer you get to Hudson and, besides the Glen Echo area, the desirability and saftey factors drop substantially. South of Hudson, you will find more panhandlers on High Street (around UDF), car break-ins back in the neighborhood, vandalism and quite a few people wandering around with shopping carts talking to themselves. There must be a halfway house somewhere around Patterson and High...there just has to be!! If you live in South Clintonville both the rentals and homes for sale are in much better shape. You can still travel south into the area Streetcreed mentions and take in cool places like Blue Danube, Dicks Den, Alana's and an amazing sushi place I can no longer remember the name of...without having to deal with vagrants and drunken college kids lighting dumpsters on fire around your house.

Arts District = Short North/Victorian Village

Your view, on Old North Columbus, is one that many have. It mostly based upon the diverse crowd of folks on the High St. commercial strip. The "bums" on High St. are highly outnumbered by folks with decent jobs, and those homeless types do not live in the neighborhood, they are visiting because of the Plasma Center on the bus line. The college kids visiting the bars by and large live south of the district.

The neighborhoods are not full of the same folks as those on the High St. corridor. And it is still a great corridor with lots of local restaurants, small eateries, and local bars. This section of HIgh St. offers more walkable excitment, within walking distance, than Clintonville stretches of High (which might appeal to a younger couple looking for some energy in their urban lifestyle.)

Glen Echo is a true gem, so atleast we both agree, that area needs to be looked into by anyone interested in living in a home in central city historic area. Homes sit on quiet streets overlooking ravines.

However, Old North Columbus neighborhoods is not a crime ridden area, it actually has many quaint streets with a diverse stock of homes. Some exploring can be needed to figure this area out. I was unfamilar with the neighborhoods until some of my close friends bought a beautiful Victorian,in the area, and fixed it up. I was impressed by the surprising number of older couples, artistic types, and young families with children living in the same neighborhood.

It is not an area for everyone, but a hidden gem in the highly popular High St. corridor. If you are looking for a stable neighborhood on the incline with a potential renovation or recently renovated property, it is an area that can pay off in the long run.

Serious man... many of the kids I went to high school with (CAHS) grew up in that neighborhood and it is no more up and coming now than it was in the mid 80's. That area never changes and has actually declined a bit since 2000. It is not a terrible slum by any stretch (because of the college students) if you are used to a semi-urban environment, but it is not the first, second or even fifth place I would recommend for someone moving to Columbus. After admittedly being one of the bad teenagers who raised hell on a moped around those streets during the 80's, I actually ended up living there from 1999 to 2004 across High from Alana's and have been back through a few times.

It doesn't change.
