Are there any suburbs with character/diversity?

Not really. Most of the diversity/character is in the Columbus neighborhoods of
German Village
Clintonville
Italian Village
Victorian Village
.... but these are in Columbus public schools, so if you chose one of these then go with a private school for your children.
The most diverse suburbs (in the technical sense) with character are
Grandview (mostly white, but a somewhat diverse white landscape.)
Bexley (mostly white and Jewish. There is a Lutheran college and seminary here.)
Upper Arlington (mostly white with some Asians/Indians who are usually doctors/professors.)
... these 3 are the older suburbs, close to downtown, and have excellent schools.
