Leaving Clintonville
I know I'm late to the party here, but have just started reading the forums as we're looking for a house. I respectfully submit my two cents as someone who's been living for the past couple of years in Clintonville, but now looking to buy in a close-in suburb.
I have to disagree with Street Cred:
The Columbus Schools, in Clintonville, rank on par with the suburbs.
Elementary? OK. Apart from the big class size, K-5 isn't bad. But we're joining the stream of parents with young kids getting out before it's too late. There are three other families just on our street doing the same right now. A friend of mine who lives closer to downtown in Columbus said the same thing: he always knows a couple is going to look to move out once the kids reach preschool age.
More to the point about the original post here: I too had the same reaction about Bexley houses appearing to be a better deal than those in UA and Grandview. Grandview in the past decade or two has become very overpriced for what it is. UA has always been pricey - what you'll find there in the $200K to $240K range is mostly outdated ranch houses with small rooms, plus much of UA is very suburban without sidewalks, etc.
I love Bexley and my initial impression was the same: wow, these houses are a relatively good value for a good, close-in suburb. However, it is really pretty slim pickins even in this economy to find a non-tiny house in decent shape, with some semblance of a yard and with more than one "real" bathroom for under $300K. On the other hand, there are plenty of houses sitting on the market for $400K to $500K. So if you have that kind of money, you may be in luck to snag something from a desperate seller.
Good luck! As we've discovered, quality is never a bargain, and getting into a good neighborhood when one has modest means always involves trade-offs.
