Happyme, uh Eastland is not on the North Side, hence the name EASTland. I have lived near the Bexley area for years also and somehow I have not seen these crackdealers and their baby mama's living in their welfare apartments quite as much as you. It seems like if you see someone standing somewhere, you place numerous labels on them and that is sad. Here are some numbers that you can look at.

Let's start with around Bexley: Here are the crimes reported over the last 7 days.(to the south and east of Bexley)
Precinct 9 Zone 2- Cruiser Districts 90,91,92(Berwick, Eastmoor, James Rd.)
Murders-0, Robbery-1, Vandalism-2,Assault-3, Burglary-12, Guns-0, Theft-10, Criminal Damaging-9, Total Score for serious crimes= 27

Precinct 12 Zone 5- Cruiser District 121 and 123(West Of Bexley-Olde Town East)
Murders-0, Robbery-1, Vandalism-0, Assault-2, Burglary-5, Guns-0, Theft-2, Criminal Damaging-2 Total Score for serious crimes= 12

Precinct 7 Zone 1 -Cruiser District 70(North of Bexley-Fifth Avenue)
Murders-0, Robbery-0, Vandalism-1, Assault-4, Burglary-2, Guns-0, Theft-2, Criminal Damaging-1 Total Score for Serious crimes= 10

Now lets look at the North Side(the one with all the driveby's and crackdealers in their busted rides that you talk about)
Precinct 7 Zone 1 Cruiser District 56,57,59(Cleveland Ave. from Fifth to Hudson, 71 to RR tracks)
Murder- 0, Robbery-1, Vandalism-1, Assault-4, Burglary-3, Guns-5, Theft-10, Criminal Damaging-2 Total Score for serious crimes= 26

How about Eastland Mall
Precinct 9, Zone 2-Cruiser district 94 and 95
Murder-0, Robbery-5, Vandalism-1, Assault-5, Burglary-9, Guns-2, Theft-14, Criminal Damaging-3 Total Score for Serious Crimes= 39

And now lets look at Franklinton
Precinct 8 Zone 3 - cruiser Districts 80,81,83,86,87(Downtown to 70, 670 to 70)
Murder-0, Robbery-3, Vandalism-2, Assault-12, Burglary-7, Guns-3, Theft-14, Criminal Damaging-8 Total Score of Serious Crimes= 49

My source is The Columbus Police You can run your own reports and look back farther Columbus Police Web Reports

Here are some good stories about Franklinton, showing what some of the problems are. These articles describe it as one of the poorest areas of Columbus
Columbus RetroMetro: Franklinton

Here is a story that explains how the povery rate is figured with a caption about Franklinton. 56% poverty rate in Franklinton- Among poorest in Columbus
The Columbus Dispatch - Local/State

If that is not enough for you, just drive over there and drive around for a few hours and look at the blight, empty and decaying homes, shelters, abandoned wharehouses, etc..
And I did not say that no other people live in Franklinton, but I said that it was mostly white, which it is.

Here is what Wikipedia says about Franklinton
Franklinton, Columbus, Ohio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And the stats about Chicago show us that you are more likely to be killed, Robbed, or Assualted in Chicago than Columbus according to the Per 100000 people listing on the page you listed. Obviously the stats for rapes were off as it said Chicago had 0 rapes. You would have proven your point more by choosing New York to compare.

Be careful out there dodging the "crackheads" and "welfare baby mama's". Hopefully one day you can open your mind a bit more.

This thread was very productive and realistic until happymee started to generalize and make comments that would scare even a researched individual.

If you are not from Columbus do not let some of the vast generalizations of this thread scare you. Columbus is a great city and has some very diverse neighborhoods. The point being that some are generalizing information for some neighborhoods that have mixed incomes. They are labeling a complex, diverse, or even nice place to be totally ____ or totally _____.

Some are obviously uncomfortable with people of different incomes coexisiting in the same place.

Example: Berwick south of Bexley in Columbus city limits.
The neighborhood has many wealthy residents, nice houses, there is also some nearby apartments where you could live if you had a income near the poverty line. Thus, some people look at that poorer group or the few "standing around" and say the entire area is poor or crime ridden.

Even in America, yes here, people of different income groups can live in the same neighborhood. And if you looked at statistics most of these areas consit of houses above 150,000 and in the case of Olde Town East your speaking more like 300,000. Thus these "poorer" people or "ghetto" people really are the minority there.

If you are affraid of seeing someone who looks like they could be a "crack head" or a poor individual you are not alone. America is a place that is affraid of poverty. We build communities to isolate the well off so they do not have to see or face the issues at play causing the poverty.

That is a complete misrepresentation. If you expect everyone to look just like you and do the same things as you then obviously these neighborhoods being talked of here are not for you.

This is one reason why I LOVE Columbus; we have neighborhoods and communities here we people of different backgrounds and incomes can live together. Not everyone with a decent or high income feels the need to leave the center city for a suburb. We have people here who are comfortable coexisiting with people of different backgrounds and working together to creat a better community and city.

I dont understand why some ppl on this site keep trying to make Columbus look worse than what it is. To make it simple, compared to a lot of cities Columbus is not ghetto. Anyone that has been to a real ghetto (Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis) knows that Columbus does not have any real ghetto areas and the bad areas that it has a very small and have middle class neighborhoods around them.Stop trying to make Columbus look worse than it is. Columbus is a nice city with a lot of nice neighborhoods. Columbus does have poverty but stop making it look so bad.

Happyme, you are obviously very emotional about this topic and I am sorry for the loss of your daughters friends lives. However, when you generalize and make statements like, "crackheads, baby mamas, welfare apartments, and welfare checks", when discussing people in a neighborhood, you are being openly disrespectful. Where are these crack houses? Give me an address and I will go check them out.

My point is, you and I obviously live close to each other, yet we have vastly different views of our area. Where I see a group of youths together, you see crack dealers selling crack.

And I do not feel that 79 murders is ok, I would much rather have 0 murders, but this conversation is not about if Columbus has murders. Obviously it does, and people are killed in Franklinton too. It is clear that certain events have caused you to have an opinion of the Eastland area that I do not share.

To tell you a bit about me since you think I have a problem with white people. My heritage is Puerto Rican, Black, Irish, Jewish, and Cherokee. I do not have room to have a problem with any race, sorry. My father is from Puerto Rico, and my mother has a black father and a Irish, Jewish, and Cherokee mother( in other words, my grandparents). When I go visit my family, many from my grandmothers side are as white as the whitest person you know and I love all of them. I have no problem with people of any race and if I saw someone bashing white people in this thread the way that I perceived you were bashing blacks, I would have stood up for them also. I feel that no prejudice is right or ok.

I grew up in the roughest neighborhood that Columbus has ever known. Greenbrier, which was nicknamed Uzi Alley by the local media in the late 80's to early 90's. I saw with my own eyes my own friends die from gunshots. During one summer, 13 people were killed in Greenbrier, which was only about a 5 square block area. Still at it's peak, I do not believe that Greenbrier was a ghetto. It was an impovershed area that had a lot of drug related crime. I have seen the worst of the worst and there is nothing you can tell me about violence in Columbus. Do you remember 1994 when the young man was shot and killed in City Center and it was all over the national news? His name was Raylyn Diamond and he was one of my best friends.

I have however been able to go to school and get a degree and I work for a major company in Columbus, that has allowed me to travel all over the place and see real ghettos. I have been involved with numerous community programs to help the community repair itself.

And one last thing, please understand that Franklinton absolutely is majority white. Yes many other people live there, but it is majority whote by a long shot. That is just a fact about the Demographics of the area. And it is in my opinion the poorest area of Columbus.
